I do hope you write a sequel. Harry still has a lot of hurdles and challenges ahead. He's got to deal with Ron and Hermione, both over what happened in the summer and also his changed relationship with Snape. Somehow he has to learn to be around the children of Death Eaters, and in particular Draco -- although I do wonder what Draco would think of his father's actions. And then eventually Harry has to get to the point where he can face the Death Eaters and Voldemort again -- not just without throwing up, but to really stand up to them. The last part of that seems like a long way off in terms of Harry's healing, but still strongly related to the events of the summer. So a sequel sounds like a good idea to me. Besides, this is my favorite of your stories!

I'm glad to learn that it's not Dumbledore being evil that's the problem, but instead Dumbledore being possessed (or sort of). Manipulative!Dumbledore is very canon. Evil!Dumbledore basically ruins a story for me, it's so non-canon.

I do hope you can update this story quickly. Any possibilities that you could update this one before the other ones? Much as I love your other stories, this particular cliffhanger is a tough one to deal with.

For some reason, this story didn't rise to the top of the recent updates when you updated on the 6th. It still shows as having been updated on Oct. 5, so I imagine people may be missing the update.

Anyway, excellent chapter! I'm worried for Dumbledore, that Harry's action may injure him more or even worse than in the past.

Author's Response: I noticed the non-update-y problem, and put a note in the relevant news archive so Jan could fix it, as she has in the past.  Hopefully that gets striaghtened out soon.  And thanks for the review!

I really liked the way you had Harry protect Dumbledore's mind, both in his own attack on Voldemort's mind and afterward. And I loved the way you had Snape get there in time to stop Harry from killing Lucius. Naturally, I can't stand Lucius, but Harry shouldn't be killing him.

Now I just worry a little about Snape having left Dumbledore in a body bind, not realizing what had been done to Dumbledore, and hoping Dumbledore is still well protected from Voldemort and can tell Snape what happened -- or at least recover until Harry can tell Snape.

Awesome chapter! And I almost never use that adjective.

I love this story. Great update. I liked your switching to Hermione's point of view for awhile. I thought that really helped that scene.

This is one of the best recovery and hurt/comfort stories I've seen in HP fan fic. It has been very well paced with the characters not only IC, but behaving in a believable manner considering the situations. I recall back around Chapter 10 (sorry, I didn't go back to check which chapter, but you know what I mean), I was concerned that the story might become melodramatic or that you'd go for the "shock value" of abuse. But that never happened. You really did an excellent job of staying focused and keeping all of the arcs well managed. Your resolutions to the various pieces have been satisfying. With all the great pacing, arcs, believable characters, you also created many wonderfully moving scenes.

And on top of everything else, you've been one of the most consistent writers at updating.

Thanks so much for a great story!

Author's Response: Thanks, Wynnleaf!  It's been quite a ride for me, emotionally, writing this story, too, and I'm glad that so many people seemed to find it realisitic in its portrayal of abuse and the subsequent survival of it.  I've very much appreciated your critiques all along, and hope you come back for the sequel . . .  --Rachel

As a first year, Harry is sorted into Slytherin instead of Gryffindor, and no one is more surprised than his new Head of House.

I think that, for me, that was the most upsetting chapter I've read of your stories. What you capture so well isn't just that Harry has difficulty trusting in others to care for him, or even that his self-esteem is so low. It's that he really doesn't even comprehend the very idea that someone would care for him. It's so completely ingrained that he has no value, that he doesn't matter, that he can't seem to even fathom the notion. Many writers get across the idea that Harry has low self-esteem or that he doesn't trust people, but you convey something even more deep and difficult to deal with. It seems to me that, with your version of Harry, it's not just a case of not believing it when Snape says he'll be there for Harry. Your Harry doesn't even know what that means, at least in relation to himself. "Surreal" I believe you had Harry think, and that fits. To Harry, it doesn't even seem like reality. Excellent chapter, as usual.

Well, well, I did wonder if you might do a story on this -- a couple of chapters back in Walk the Shadows and then a bit of discussion in the reviews... Anyway, it's a great idea. I'd love to see your oh-so-IC Snape deal with your very IC Harry in Slytherin. So Snape thought Harry would have done better in Slytherin, eh? I guess we'll find out.

    Author's Response: Exactly.  :-)

Good opening for Snape with the Slytherins. Interesting what Snape says and how Harry reacts to some of the rules. I am guessing about some of Harry's reactions, but am looking forward to Snape learning more. I love it that you're writing this particular story.

Interesting seeing all of this first day through Harry's perspective. I've read this over again carefully and still can't quite figure something out. I'm assuming from several thoughts Harry has that he has bruising on his body (or am I misreading?), but if that's so, why didn't Snape notice anything? Harry seems worried about showering around the other kids, so I assume there's something he doesn't want them to see. I'm hoping we get something of Snape's perspective next.

Author's Response: Hi wynnleaf!  The next chapter will definitely be a Snape one.  I'm going to try and alternate chapters as much as possible between Harry and Snape, although I had a brief bit at the beginning of ch 3 which was supposed to give a sense of why Snape might not be in the best mind set to be observing much in his subsequent encounter with Harry.  But that'll also be addressed more in the next chapter.  Thanks for the review!
