Simply wonderful. I love your description of Severus: "The man was like one of those nesting boxes, just when you unlocked one, there was another one inside, and another and another, all surrounded with wards and locks like a fortress." - fits him to a 'T'. I love the somewhat fast pace at which this is flowing and am eager to read the ensuing chapter.
I can feel Harry's pain. It takes a long time for your body to become adjusted to horseback riding and until it does it is quite painful. I'm glad that he isn't giving up and is doing wonderfully. It is probably better that he wishes to learn riding bareback, as in tense situations (like in the attack) a saddle is unlikely to be available. It will also help him to better understand how to move with a horse if he can feel the body instead of the saddle.

Amazing chapter - all of it worked well. You weave such a wonderful world within the realm of the Harry Potter world; it could stand alone quite well. In particular, I really love this line: "He had done what was right, not what was easy..." - so very true and such an important concept to grasp and yet so difficult to do. Additionally, I really enjoyed the explanation for why Severus does not drop in on the headmaster unannounced - I can totally see that happening. WONDERFUL writing, highly entertaining! :D

Really nice chapter. You seem very knowledgeable and comfortable about horse riding. I am not, but the chapter reads really well.
