Reviews For Harry Potter and the Chained Souls
You have a real gift for characterization and dialogue, and for the precise and lucid use of language that's rare enough in published fiction, let alone fanfic. Thank you for writing.
This is the best Snape mentors Harry fic I've ever read. I've spent all my free time this week reading both of your stories (good thing the husband is out of town - I haven't cooked a lick) and am looking anxiously to more work from you. This is the perfect way for me to continue my Pottermania after watching TOotP and reading DH. Java

Beautifully dramatic, and extremely realisic in its dealings with the lingering effects of Voldemort's defeat - everything isn't suddenly all sunshine and roses just because he's dead. The characters have very real psychological issues to deal with. I love the distinction between faceless enemies and the parents of schoolmates. It's really something to consider, and something that is frequently neglected in fanon. I mean, it's one thing to rejoice in killing an evil death eater, and another to come to breakfast the next morning and look at a crying eleven-year-old and know that you've just killed her father. I really appreciate that you didn't just gloss over this point. I almost cheered aloud when Snape announced his presence! Be still, my heart! My hero! I really liked Harry's rationalization that it was Snape who gave his mother the opportunity to *choose* to sacrifice her life for her son - it's a unique idea, and a very valid point. Finally, the ending was just perfect. Hopeful, bringing closure, and yet totally devoid of fluff! Brilliantly done. This story ends on just the right note, and yet...there's going to be something missing with no more updates to look forward to. Author's Response: << I really liked Harry's rationalization that it was Snape who gave his mother the opportunity to *choose* to sacrifice her life for her son - it's a unique idea, and a very valid point. >> I have JKR to thank for this. In one of her interviews, years ago, she made a point of distinguishing Lily's sacrifice from James's. After all James loved his son as much as Lily did and gave his life for both Harry and Lily. But he couldn't have saved Harry because as JKR put it, "he was always going to die." JKR said that Lily was able to save Harry specifically because she was given the choice to step aside and didn't.
Truly wonderful ending! Throughout "Chained Souls" I have been very impressed with how well you wove the HBP backstory of Snape into your story. Even though the story is AU, your Snape is (to date at least) so canon! Thank you for a very satisfying ending. Like many, I'm half dreading DH. When I was worried that you'd kill off Snape, I wasn't sure if I could deal with finishing your story and then the very next week reading DH. Other grim or tragic stories might not bother me, but yours is so well written and the characters so well drawn that I knew the impact of your outcome would be much stronger than for most fan fic stories. What a relief that you ended everything so well. I love the way you pulled together lots of threads. I had felt sure that the Healers Gamble would have some importance later, and Dumbledore's explanation was perfect and quite believable. The Afterward, in particular, was well done because it seems to fit the characters so perfectly. Exploring the way Harry and Snape were affected by the aftermath of the war was important as well and was done most effectively. In short, superb story and congratulations on getting it all done before DH!
I'm absolutely speechless. great chapter, but how could you stop right there. just evil. waiting for more...hopefully fast.
okay... breathe, kelli.... breathe... it's a fanfic... OMG, you have to updated soon! I might hyperventilate out of anxiousness! |
