Uncle Vernon is such a ...GAH! What a terrible thing to do to a kids pet. That's just awful - though I do like the way you incorporated her death into the story. My heart hitched when he mourned her death in canon.

So, I'm gathering that Snape's - promise - to arrange for other accomidations would mean St. Mungos? Not because he can't handle an out of control teen, but because he thinks Harry may need the help? Psychologically?

Great chapter. Gotta love the hurt/comfort stuff :D

    Author's Response:

Hi Kiera,  thanks for the review!  I should have a new chapter out on the weekend, if all goes as planned.  Yes, I will be more explicit about what they're "discussion of rules" was in the next chapter, but Snape did indeed threaten him with St. Mungo's, if he didn't promise to obey them, and purely for Harry's own safety.  And yes, I think I was almost as upset about Hedwig dying as I was about . . . other people who figure prominently in my fic.  *sigh*  Consider it my small revenge, to have them here.

Glad to see Harry working through all his problems one step at a time, even if lashing out at Severus is the way to get it done. He'll get better as time goes on, keep up the great work and update soon. LES

Author's Response: Hi LES,  Yep, it's gonna be slow going for Harry, but he'll work through it, piece by piece.  I should have a new chappie out this weekend.  Today, Whelp!

I like how Harry still has some spirit left in him after everything that happened. In other stories I've read, he is just distraught over what happened but here, Harry still enjoys things like flying. And he yells at Snape, rather than being all subdued and quiet about everything. This is somewhat different than others I've read and I like that.

Author's Response: Thanks for the review!  Yeah, I didn't want to do unmitigated gloom, and I figrued that, since Harry has always had kind of a sh** life, but has always been able to take pleasure in some things (like flying) that he would still, here.  And Harry's a VERY angry person, as we saw in OotP, particularly.  When given an outlet, he'll go for it.

Oh, Hedwig.. :( It took me a while to get over what happened to her in the 7th book. I'm actually surprised Vernon really didn't kill her in the actual series. Poor Harry. It's good he can cry, though. Holding it in is much more unhealthy...hopefully this means he's making a little progress. I really like the idea about Severus making Harry write in a journal. You did a nice job with this chapter :) Just oddly curious: which story do you find easier to write...Whelp or Shadows? I enjoy them both immensely!

    Author's Response:

Hi Jade,  I actually find Whelp far easier to write.  I think it's because, although both deal with tough topics re: child abuse, Shadows is really focused on Harry's recovery, where Whelp has ample opportunities for him to just act like a child.  I've had experience working both with children who have been abused, and with adults who have been victims of rape, and of the two, I found working with children easier, too.  But it's something I wanted to try, here, so I'm doing my best!  Glad to see it seems to be working, over all.

    Thanks for the review!

Very well written chapter. You write this kind of situation very convincingly.

Author's Response: Thanks, wynnleaf!  As I mention to Jade (above -- can other readers see the responses?) I've worked with rape and abuse survivors, and so have an inkling, anyway, of the process they go through in recovery.

Another wonderful chapter. Snape is great in this. Poor Hedwig, of all things. I'm glad you have Snape realizing what Hedwig meant to Harry.

Author's Response: Thanks for the review!  Yeah, more will be made of Snape's background, and how come he knows how to deal with Harry.  But not till later.  I should have a new chppie out this weekend.

Haha, Harry throwing a fit. That's awesome. Snape took it surprisingly well... well, he at least didn't have a complete cow at it. I guess you'd get used to it after a while, but I'd be one to yell right back. Interesting that Snape brought up that he could break the cup. Lol. You would think he'd forbid it, but I guess considering the circumstances it's understandable. I also wonder if Voldy is gone from his mind for good. Poor Harry doesn't ever seem to get a break from that @$$hole. Lol.

Author's Response: Thanks for the review!  Yeah, Snape is trying to be understanding, but he realizes how purgative a bit of destruction can be.  And he did yell . . . a bit.  :-)

Wow, I love that Harry is angry in this! It's not at all surprising but I guess I'm so used to the Harry in these kinds of stories being upset and somewhat clingy towards Snape because of his role as rescuer and temporary guardian.

It's rather refreshing to see and made me enjoy this chapter greatly. You're story is a cut above the rest.

I'm also enjoying your fast updates. Keep up the great work!

Author's Response: Thanks!  I'm not all that fond of clingy!Harry, myself, and anger is his usual response to pretty much everything stressful, in general, so I figured to notch it up a bit.  New chapter should be done tomorrow.
