Title: Chapter 20: Vulnerable 03 Jan 2008 2:51 pm
Reviewer: pkrosche (Signed) [Report This]
YAY UPDATE! I knew I should have checked again last night before I went to bed! Urgh!! Oh, well, it woke me up this morning! REALLY great chapter! I felt my heart do all sorts of things in the last twenty minutes that I didn't even think were possible...

Thank goodness Harry wasn't captured...I like what you came up with a lot better! But, still really hard on all present at the same time. It truly was heartbreaking to continue reading what was going on. But, alas, it is over and now both Severus and Harry have taken a huge step in their relationship that, hopefully, they won't need to retake. But, you have some serious writing skills here, it was just perfect! (And by the way, I'm really glad you didn't wait a few extra days to update! That would have been tourture!!)

You were awesome with characterization all around this chapter, it really is you forte. Love, love, loved Ginny. She really is perfect for Harry and exactly as J.K. created her. But, I'm really glad her and Harry's relationship has progressed the way it has too...I knew this was a likely result when Harry first pulled her into the pensive. *sigh*

Remus was amazing as well. Good job of staying on the steps, allowing Sev and Harry to have their time together. It must not have been easy for him, but he did it. Hopefully Severus realizes this too, and knows that Remus won't be competing as much in future (if indeed he won't be).

Severus was absolutly amazing...words are begining to fail. That whole scene with Harry was truly revolutionary. In all the fics I've read, it's never been done in quite that way...perfect. Both Harry and Severus acted just as they should in this alternate reality called fanfiction that you've created, it truly was perfect. Enough said. I congradulate you on you awesomness and bow down to you.

I am curious to see how Harry does decide to address Snape. It should be interesting to watch him falter for the right word. And, just looking over the chapter again, I'm glad that Harry's appearance won't change here. In some fics, it works and plays a bigger part in the story, however, yours dosen't need more agnst...it's brilliant just the way it is! (And I absolutly adore your agnst too!)

I think that's it. If I remember someting else, I'll be sure to add it. Good luck with the next chapter, I'm certainly looking forward to this detention! See you soon! (Or are you going to tourture us all? You have been really good at getting chapters out and for that I thank you...and your muse who keeps pestering you!) And this is my 100th review! Yay for triple digits! I think you should get a prize...hmmmm...

    Author's Response:

A prize?  For me?  Yes, please! :oP

Thanks for a long review!  I love my long reviewers!

LOL about Harry not being captured.  I was laughing over all the reviews last time as people kept speculating that something terrible was going to happen to Harry.  No Death Eaters...not quite yet.

Thank you for the characterization compliment.  I really enjoy trying to keep everyone in character. I love Ginny too.  I just wanted more of her in the books so I forced it here!  LOL

Yep, Remus is trying...I told you all that he would.  He's much more mature this way than Sev is.  Doesn't mean it's easy but he'll continue to try.  I'm not going to promise no more butting heads between the two of them, though....

I'm so happy you liked the way Sev handled things with Harry.  I just really couldn't see him trying to explain with words, or any other way.  He just doesn't do talking about his feelings very well, does he?

Harry does need to figure out what to call that snarky father of his, doesn't he?  Hmmmm....we'll just have to wait and see.

There has only been a few fics that I've enjoyed where the changing of Harry's appearance was well done.  It usually just bugs me, mostly because I just like to picture Harry as Harry. And you're right...I don't think we need more angst here! I like too that Harry can look like James and it doesn't bother Snape because he expects him to look like that and because now, as Severus knows the truth, he doesn't have to think of James with so much venon as before...after all, the two of them were sort of like friends all those years ago.

Don't worry...I won't make you wait too long though it might not be as fast as this past chapter.  That was just pure crazed inspiration!  LOL  Thanks for your lovely review!

Excellent chapter. The chapter title is perfect, both Harry and Snape's vulnerability is almost palpable. I have to admit that this was a complete breakthrough for the two, although I'm sure it's not all going to be smooth sailing from this point on. Both of them have to get used to the idea of actually having a family again. And we all know how dysfunctional even the best of families can be at times. Should be interesting.

I loved Ginny's part in this chapter. In my opinion she is perfect for Harry. I didn't really feel that way until book 5 when she truly began to show who she was. Your Ginny is exactly how I imagine her to be, if JKR had devoted more time to her character.

And, of course, Remus is awesome. No one can go wrong by adding his character into the story.

Anyway, loved the chapter. Sorry I didn't review the last chapter. I was having computer issues, but, thankfully, they have been resolved. Take care....

    Author's Response:

Thank you.  I'm glad you liked the title, especially.  I struggled a bit with that one.  And, nope...there will be no smooth sailing for these two, though maybe they can start having issues that are a bit less tidal-wavish, as they learn to be father and son.  LOL

Dysfunction is definitely in the cards here, especially as both of them have yet to resolve issues involving a certain wizard called Voldemort. ;o)

I'm glad you liked Ginny.  I think she is perfect for Harry as well.  Thank you for the compliment about her characterization in the story.

I love Remus too, especially as he is really trying to let Sev and Harry find their way, without interference.

Glad your computer issues are resolved and glad you're still enjoying the story!  Thanks for the review!

    OMG...

(Lays head in arms on the computer desk and SOBS! Need three tissues from the infamous computer Kleenix box this time).

Now, I started this chapter thinking, "Oh, this is going to be a 'rescue Harry from the Death Eater/Dementor/dangerous creature scenario' chapter" and was almost disappointed when Ginny found Harry so quickly. A brief thought of, "well, that was anti-climatic."

I should SO know better with this story by now. (Becomes Dobby and hits head on the wall in punishment). And before I go further, it should go without saying but I will anyway that Ginny ROCKS! Having been so ambivalent to her in canon, I just love how (as you write her) she is always Harry's rock and SHE CAN PUT SNAPE IN HIS PLACE WITH A MERE LOOK. Enough said...she's a goddess.

Anyway, I get further along to the part where Severus says:

“I do not wish to forget that you are my son. Not again.”

Gulp! The lump in my throat starts, and then Harry replies:

“But you did. I know you still love my mum. How could have just stopped loving me?"

That did it...I'm now on the verge of a free-for-all cry fest and I can't go there because I have to read my kids their bedtime stories in 15 minutes and I shut down the story (which I never, ever do mid-chapter) and promise to come back right after they are safely tucked in....which takes longer than I thought because Hubby has let them stay up and play XBox longer and I swear silently than I can't go back and finish this as fast as I want to and I do lots of swearing in my head - but I'm off track now.)

Figuring I'm ready this time for the emotional roller coaster to restart, I find myself dead wrong and get totally wrapped up all over and this time do get to indulge in a tear festival, because that's just who I am. I can cry at the drop of a dime.

The sharing of memories was beautiful. I don't know what else to add. And the hug! What it took Severus to open up to Harry in both of those ways says volumes in the love he has rediscovered for his son.

What will Harry call Severus from now on? Can't wait to see. I totally expected Remus to be sitting there on the steps watching. Love that werewolf. And I suspect that Severus (still under the disillusionment charm) hung around to listen in on their conversation.

I'm hoping that you're planning on, oh, like a hundred chapters because I could just follow this story for a very long time.

    Author's Response:

All right, lady...can I just say that I adore you?  I just really do.  :o)

Not only are you an extremely talented artist...you compleletely and totally know how to make me feel brilliant!  Thank you.  I'm so happy that I made you cry, too!  LOL  I cried too as I wrote this chapter...I just couldn't stop myself.  Harry was so sad, hurting so much that Severus had hated him for so many years and Severus was so vulnerable, desperate to keep his newly found son.  It was just too much.  The memory sharing was intentional of Severus' part, once he made up his mind to do it,but the hug...oh that was utterly spur of the moment.  Severus couldn't have planned that.  Ah.  I had been waiting for that hug since this story's conception.  Sigh.

And, yes, Severus does very much love his son.  It will be fun to see what he does next.  I've started on the next chapter and I'm already laughing!  LOL

Remus was a tricky little bugger this chapter.  He tried to weasel his way in so many times, but ultimately he kept out the way, knowing that Harry needed that time with Severus.  But, still he was there, waiting if Harry needed him.  I just love that about him.  And, see...Remus is trying real hard not to play tug of war with Harry, hard as it is for him to watch Harry and his father growing closer.

Hmmm...you'll have to just wait and see what happens with the whole 'addressing Snape' thingy. :oP  And, maybe you'll even find out if Severus did stick around with Remus and Harry.  LOL

100 chapters sounds good to me.  I am hoping, as was my original plan to take these two through the school year.  We'll see how it pans out.  I am bit anxious however, as it can't be all angst forever.  Eventually these two will have to settle into their new roles with some sort of comfort.  And of course, there are still many issues to be reconciled as well as a certain snake-like monster to be destroyed.  LOL  Well, we'll see how we do, I guess.  :o)

Oh, and I'm so, so glad (though I think I've said it before) that you are enjoying our Ginny here.  This is just how I wished she could have been in the books.  Just more.  I never got to see enough of her and I just really love her.

Thanks so much for your review! I am axiously awaiting your finished pic!

Goodness gracious, I loved this chapter! It was emotional and wonderful, and I just marvel at your ability to keep Severus in character while still treating Harry with such kindness. And I'm still in awe of your freakish ability to spit out chapters like a mad-woman. lol.

Keep it up! You're a fab writer :)

    Author's Response:

Hey thanks!  I just reviewed your new chap over on FF and it rocked!

Thanks for the compliments.  This chapter was really hard for me.  I was getting too emotional!  LOL  This one was freakishly fast, wasn't it?  My hubby is home this week and I sequested myself in the library for hours to write this one.  I just had to get it out.  It's been in my head since the beginning and I couldn't wait any longer.  LOL

    Thanks for the review!  :o)

You know, to be so smart (and I do believe the man is practically a genius in many ways), Severus can be really dumb sometimes. I can't believe he thought picking a fight, even a supposedly pretend one, with Harry would be a good idea. Why in the world didn't he just let Harry play sick?

The whole problem with the 'fight', as I see it and I may be wrong--you can let me know, is that their relationship is still much too fragile to withstand it, especially after all those years of real hostility between them.

Harry just isn't secure enough with Severus to be able to keep from reverting. In his mind, he may know that it's supposed to be a show, but in his heart, I think it's hard to forget all the past cruelties and for him to not be hurt.

Anyway, I loved Harry and Ginny, too, and I'm worried about where Harry has gotten to. I personally think Severus owes Harry an apology and he needs to make his true feelings plain. But, knowing Severus, that may be asking too much still. Guess we'll see, hmm?

    Looking forward to more!

    Author's Response:

Wow, you're practically stealing lines from Chapter 20!  LOL

You've hit the nail on the head here.  That's exactly the problem and you're right as well that Severus was completely dense to believe a faux fight was a good idea.  I think though that he didn't want to go with Remus' idea simply becase it was Remus' idea.

I'm still chuckling how 'right on' you are about Harry's fragile heart.  :o)

Severus does owe Harry an apology for sure...we'll see what he's able to deliver...you're right again though...something needs to give here before Harry completely loses it.

Yay for updates! I was so excited when I saw this!! YAY AGAIN!! (Especially since you're going to be getting more soon! In that case, who cares about the cliff hanger? I kinda like it, because I know you're not going to wait three months to update again!)

Well, I really want to give Harry a big hug and maybe a mug of hot chocolate too. There's just so much going on in his life now. *sigh* Poor kid. Ok, but I'm really confused now, did Severus want Harry to Captain the Quidditch team or not? I can't quite remember what conversation went on with Remus that made Harry decide to do it, but I suppose I could reread...that's next.

And Remus, that werewolf is just so cool, and I love that both he and Severus are fighting over Harry's affection, but come on! When are they going to see that what they're doing is detrimental to Harry? If they could just come to some kind of truse so that Harry could go to both of them while he and Severus are still working on the relationsip...it would be better all around. *sigh once again*

And Ginny! I was soo happy to see her in this one! Especially the snogging...I was laughing soooo hard, you have no idea! And I loved the scene in the Great Hall, so characteristic of Ginny to tell off Ron and Hermione and storm out to look for Harry.

And Severus! I especially enjoyed his reaction and revelation in the Great Hall too...he's so parental! But, I am a little dissapointed in him, how did he think that arguing in Potions was a good idea? Sometimes, that man! I suppose it would have worked, could have worked... But I do really like how both Harry and Sev are deeply wounded by the things that were said. In other fics that I've read, Harry plays along with the verbal sparring and both parties walk away unscathed. But, needing to have them patch things over during detention is more Sev's style.

And I, along with all of your other readers wonder where Harry has gone!! Hopefully he's not going to do anything stupid and rash, but then again, he wouldn't really be Harry. It would suck if he was captured by Death Eaters...hmmm...*thinks of possibilities*

Well, Happy New Year and Happy Belated Birthday to Voldie! Good luck with the next chapter, until then!

    Author's Response:

Yeah, I know...cliffhangers here are not really so bad.  Oh well.  Maybe I should just wait a couple of extra days to torture you all a bit more!  LOL

Last chapter, McGonagall appointed Harry Quidditch Captain; he was reluctant to do it and Remus pointed out to him that he was going to play anyway so he might as well just accept.  Severus, on the other hand thought that Harry was stretching himself too thinly as he has so much else to do this term.  Harry asked his advice and he told Harry to make his own choice, even though he obviously wanted to tell Harry not to take on the Captaincy or perhaps not to play Quidditch at all.  So, even though Severus was not pleased with Harry's decison, he wants him to know that it was his decision and he is not angry about the choice.  See?  :o)

As I said in a previous review response, I love the contrast between the Sev and Remus and Remus, now that he's ackowledged his feelings, will 'try' not to let his feelings affect Harry.  Emphasis on the 'try' though because obviously he cares about Harry a lot and he can't really just let Severus yank Harry about like a rag doll, so we'll see how Remus handles things, won't we?  LOL

If you liked Ginny here, you'll love next chapter.  Ginny abounds!

Sev is very parental, but mostly in the comfort of his own thoughts.  If only the man could put himself at risk a little more so Harry could really see that part of Snape.  But, next chapter, some hefty feelings are gonna be put out there so Severus really is not going to have much of a chance against Harry!  LOL

See, Sev doesn't really understand how Harry could have been so strongly affected by Sev's jibes.  Harry was after all, supposed to have known that he was going to try to push Harry to give him a detention.  He didn't realize Harry's comments would be able to hurt him.  Neither of them was prepared for what happened, really.  I'm glad you liked the sparring and the hurt that came from it.  I just really don't think it could have worked out differently, with both of them still so raw.

You'll just have to wait and see where Harry went!  But, since Ginny and Sev both went after him, there's bound to be lots of trouble come next chapter.  LOL

LOL about your possibilities!  Thanks for the review.

How in the world do you get these chapters out so quickly?! Amazing. :) Especially loved the confrontation between Harry and Snape during Potions with Harry all...what is he doing? I love the way you write Severus. Keep up the awesome work!

    Author's Response:

Thanks so much!  I basically just have no life from 7pm and onwards as my kids are in bed and my husband is in medical school, at the hospital all hours of the night!  LOL  Writing is my only hobby right now...or should I say, obsession.  :o)

Glad you liked the Severus/Harry battle in potions.  That was fun and yeah, Harry's annoyance with what Snape could be up to was especially fun.  Glad you like the way Severus is written here.  I love Sev.  He's just too fun.

    Thanks for the review!

Well, that was a meaty chapter, wasn't it? I did miss those frequent updates too...so I as so happy to see this tonight. ;-)

Severus and Remus playing tug-of-war over Harry - poor Harry! They each being jealous of each other's relationship with Harry isn't going to be easy on that poor kid. But deliciously fun to read all the same.

The mystery continues over Lily's charm. Hmmm....

I just KNEW that asking Harry to antagonize Severus was a horribly bad idea; their emotions with each other or just too raw at this point. Remus, of course, had the sensible solution in Harry feigning illness but heaven forbid Severus agree to one of the werewolf's ideas.

And where did Harry go, anyway? Evil, evil cliffie!

I can officially start some fanart with my new Christmas present (which wasn't working with my computer until today). Santa brought me a really cool Wacom graphics tablet, and I'm just itching to start some art on it. There's just the cutest picture of Severus and baby Harry in my head that I just think needs to come out if I can pull it off.

Welcome back from your holiday vacation!

    Author's Response:

Okay, well now you have me officially anxious over here!  I can't wait to see some fanart.  I'm so excited!   And Severus and baby Harry...yippeeee!

I know what you mean...I've only been able to write little bits at a time and it was driving me insane too.  Unlike now, where I've already gotten almost 3 pages done of Chapter 20.  This promises to be another 'meaty' one!

Tug of war!  LOL  Well, Remus will *try* to keep his feelings in check now that he went and upset Harry over his jealousy, unlike Severus whose own fierce possessiveness won't be letting up anytime soon. Emphasis on the *try* though because I doubt very much that old Remus was oblivious to the scene in the Great Hall.  Hee hee.

Lily's Charm does continue to mystify all of us.  But, now we do know a rather important (maybe) detail about it.  If Harry could find the courage to just ask Severus about it!  All in good time. :o)

Of course atagonizing Severus was a terrible idea and Harry really had no plans to go along with it.  Ron's blowing up a cauldron idea would have been much safer!

I'm sorry but I couldn't help myself.  Cliffhangers are just FUN!   But, we do have both Ginny and Severus storming out of the Great Hall, so at least you know something interesting is going to be happening.  Next chapter up in the next few days as we're going back to the old schedule! YAY!

Title: Chapter 18: Progress 29 Dec 2007 3:04 pm
Reviewer: Polaris (Signed) [Report This]
This was good, progress but not too much progress. Realistic. I really like the way that Harry kind of figures out with his friends and Remus what Severus's actions mean. It feels refreshing.

Remus seemed antsy when he was taking Harry to his rooms for the lesson. Was this just because he knew that Severus was going to tell him about not being allowed to go to Hogsmeade or something else?

I'm looking very much forward to those two spending some time together instead of the Hogsmeade thing, and especially with no other task hanging over them like Occlumency. It was so nice of Severus to ask! Nice way to divert an argument too, otherwise Harry could have gone on for awhile, I'm sure.

I saw that you have a new chapter for "What If..." also so I'm off to read that! Cheers!

    Author's Response:

Glad you liked it!  Slow progress for sure, but progress nonetheless.  Yeah, Harry's friends are coming in really handy here, aren't they?

Remus is up again in the next chapter so you'll have to wait to see what his problem is.  Don't worry though...his angst will be sorted out (kind of at least) and we'll be back to a more happy Remus.

Ginny is up as well and Harry and Severus spending a carefree day together.  Well, all right...it won't be completely carefree because what fun would that be?  LOL

I really like that you  saw that Sev was using the invitation partially as a way to distract Harry.  He does tend to go on and on about things, doesn't he.  :o)

Thanks for reviewing.  Glad you're enjoying still!
