Title: A Place to Call Home 21 Sep 2009 6:31 am

Wonderful chapter, Pandora! I loved how Severus healed Harry's broken nose at the beginning...poor Harry, he really does have a hard time with wizarding travel, doesn't he?

It was really interesting to meet Susan, who knew both Lily and Severus as children and went to school with them. I bet she could tell Harry some fascinating tales!

I loved all the descriptions, of the village and most of all, of the house. It sounds like a perfect cozy cottage...or it will be one day, lol! I'm like Harry, I can see the potential perfectly in my mind's eye.

I wonder if Harry will ever call Severus 'Dad' or talk with him about how having a father has helped him to care about living again, after the pain of losing Sirius. It just reminds me that, as far as they've come already, there's still a lot to talk about and deal with.

I just love it all, and maybe I'm greedy, but I just can't wait for the next chapter!

    Author's Response:

Oh thanks. Yeah, poor Harry he's not lucky when it comes to travelling the Wizarding way.

Oh, I just thought that it would be interesting to have some stories of Severus and Lily from a third party's perspective.

Yes, when Harry and Severus are finished decorating, Harry will really have a place to call home, and he'll feel that it truly belongs to him because he had a hand in decorating it. Let's face it, Severus is not going to be much help! He'll probably let Harry make most of the decisions.

Well, Harry and Severus are getting closer, but Harry is a little older in this fic than most, so it might be a while yet before he's ready to let go of thinking of James as "Dad", but perhaps as time goes on, he'll feel less guilty about using that term to address Severus, but it's not going to be as easy for him as if he were younger. He sorted of experimented with using the term "Father" to see how Severus reacted, so maybe he'll move to the next level soon.

There are so many issues to deal with, and even though they get on each other's nerves at times, I think that Harry is starting to feel more comfortable with Severus, but again, it's a slow process. Perhaps, the magic of Christmas will work wonders on both of our boys!!

Oh, and your chapter was superb Kristeh, and I want more too!! :)

Great chapter, I liked how Harry admitted he was wrong to Ginny and I hope Ron quits being such an idiot to Hermione. She did the right thing, people could have gotten seriously hurt. I knew someone in my dorm in college who OD'd on alcohol and died as a result. If someone had been checking up on him, maybe it wouldn't have happened. Ron should thank Hermione, not be a nasty git to her.

I'm glad that Sev and Harry are getting along better now and I would love to see what they do with the house. It should be a good chance to bond.

The detentions were good too and I hope they all learn their lessons.

    Author's Response:

Thanks, I thought that Harry was quite mature about the whole thing, but Ron as usual needs to grow up a bit.  On the news here a couple of years ago, there was a thirteen year old girl who died from alcohol poisoning too. Kids just don't see alcohol in the same light as drugs. The legal age here is eighteen, and  when my daughter was eighteen, she got really really drunk, and she was vomitting quite heavily, and I was scared for her. She fell asleep in the chair in her room, and I made sure that her neck was upright, and I kept checking on her all night, because I kept thinking that she would choke on her own vomit if she were lying down, which happened to a girl I knew. She had had a little too much to drink, then took some aspirin or tylenonl, and died because she choked on her vomit in her sleep.

Yeah, it's taken time, but I think that Severus and Harry are finally feeling more comfortable with each other. I think that fixing up the house will be good for them. It will give them a common goal and make Harry feel more at home, if he has some input into how the house is decorated.

I think that the punishments were harsh, but necessary. Hopefully, they've all taken it to heart.

Boy, Ron can be a nasty piece of work, can't he? A real hard case. Is poor Hermione ever going to be let off for good behaviour. Ron is even down on Harry now so he is cutting off all of his old friends.

I know it is going back over old ground, but the Muggle drug thing is getting to me. I can only recall the one mention of the drugs and that was when Seamus offered it to Harry...I was not under the impression that it had been widely distributed. Did Seamus get into extra trouble for peddling drugs?

Anyway, at least Harry and Ginny are back together again...well kinda. Are they ever going to get to spend some time together, I wonder? Without ron or Severus glowering at them, that it.

I can take the detentions and the school repercussions, but Severus running every aspect of Harry's life is a bit much when you consider that Harry is of age. still, as Harry isn't complaining, then my comment is moot.

Can't wait to read about Harry's impressions of Spinner's End.

Good job Dawn...especially with Ron's bad mood and his nastiness. Even Hermione's tears are not having any effect on him. Her distress is well described too.

    Lesley~

    Author's Response:

Ron is just very stubborn, but he always has been, hasn't he? Hopefully, Ron will come around eventually, and give poor Hermione a break.

Well, it wasn't really mentioned, but it was implied that the drugs did get passed around, but no one was really singled out though, because no one really spoke about "who" brought the drugs in. I think that Minerva and Severus was trying to make all the seventh years who planned the party, to take responsibility. It would be impossible to prove who exactly was responsible for the drugs. Anyway, the younger students didn't necessarily smoke, it was really only the older boys, but that is not really the issue for Minerva anyway. She didn't approve of alcohol and drugs being present at all on school grounds. They just can't set a precedent. They have to have the same rules for all the students, whether they're of age or not.

I realise that Harry is of age, and I've tried not to veer too much from Canon, but I added a little extra sort of little-known law that parents are still responsible for their children, until they are either finished their schooling, or reach eighteen years of age. That is to give Severus a little leeway for being a little bossy with Harry. Of course, Severus is that type anyway.  I don't think that Snape in Canon would hesitate to try to control his adult son either. He is Snape, after all, but I've given him a little excuse for being that way by making up that little addition to the "of-age" law. It would be natural for him to be angry if Harry broke rules because it would reflect on him, as Harry's father. Actually, even without this by-law, even if Severus "wasn't" Harry's father, Severus is still, not only a professor, but a Deputy-Headmaster as well, so Severus having the reputation that he does for being a strict disciplinarian, is definitely going to be pissed that Harry "again" broke the rules.

Don't worry, once Harry's punishment is over, Ginny is going to come to stay at Spinner's End, or at least visit, and I've got some plans to allow them some time alone. Maybe, he'll take her out to dinner or something. I have to think about it. Severus will eventually lighten up as time goes on. He's just a new father, so he's overcompensating a bit.

I'm looking forward to the whole decorating Spinner's End and Harry's reactions too. I'm trying to remember in the books, if Spinners End was in the country, or in London, as is implied in the movie. So, I'm writing it as if it is more in a  quiet Muggle neighbourd, and sort of countryish. Not sure in that is accurate as in Canon, but I'm changing it to suit my purposes of the story.

Thanks Lesley. I wasn't sure if it was too much or not. It's hard find a believable balance, but considering what a hard nut Ron was during the Triwizard Tournament, I don't think that it's unreasonable that Ron would react like this, and since Harry has a big heart, and has always been more reasonable and forgiving, that he would let go of his anger more quickly.

    Great chapter xxx

Ron is a prat in this story and doesn't deserve Hermione...but that's just my opinion xx

    Author's Response:

    Thanks!!

Poor Ron, he really does get the short-end of the stick in fanfics, doesn't he? LOL!  Perhaps, he'll grow up eventually.

I do hope the weekend goes well - Harry is so excited to be going to his own home, with his father. Loved how easily Severus embarrassed Harry about Ginny.

Author's Response: Yeah, Harry is like a little kid. He is finally going to have a real home with someone that cares about him, doesn't just tolerate him.  Yeah, I thought that it would be cute to have Severus tease Harry a bit about Ginny, and it goes to show how far their relationship has come.

Wonderful chapter, Pandora! I'm happy that Harry and Ginny have settled things between them. You write them very well. I feel badly for Hermione. She was in a tough position. I hope Ron will come to understand that, too, though I can also see why he is upset and feels betrayed.

I wonder if Hermione had been able to get him and Harry off alone during the party, and expressed her concerns, particularly for the younger students and explained that drugs can be dangerous (I had the feeling that Ron, being a wizard, didn't really understand that), if the boys would have come around to her side then, and agreed that they needed adult intervention...or if they were too far gone at that point. It's kind of interesting to wonder if Hermione could have gotten through to them, cause Ron would not intentionally endanger the younger kids, or any of them, he just wasn't thinking and perhaps, like with the drugs, just didn't fully understand.

I loved how Harry was so excited about Spinner's End and having a real home with Severus. And I loved how Severus wanted it to be nicer for his son. That was very sweet and endearing. But as he thought, with the both of them working on it together and planning how to decorate it, it will really be a home for the both of them. I hope they'll have a good time, and bond more, and maybe learn more about one another.

And Severus does have a sense of humor, after all! (Referring to the old boot portkey). Now Harry has to think of some way to get him back!

I loved it and already I can't wait for the next chapter!

    Author's Response:

I don't think that Ron or Harry were coherant enough to understand anything! They were both drunk and a little high on Muggle drugs. It's unfortunate that Hermione was put in the positon of being the "responsible" one yet again, but Harry and Ron were too far gone to have been any  use.  Besides, Hermione was worried about them as well.  Harry had just gotten over his bout with dark magic, and his change of appearance, having to deal with having a new father in his life and the grief that both he and Ron were going through after all the losses that they both have suffered. They both just wanted to forget their respective troubles, but perhaps lost control a bit, and were in no fit shape to supervise the younger students.  Even Hermione couldn't handle it solely on her own. They really did need the help of a teacher, before a serious situation occurred. Hopefully, with time, Ron will come to understand the difficult decision that Hermione had to make, and that it was not a concious act to make his life miserable. Ron is really feeling like Hermione reporting them, was a personal affront, and it really wasn't.  Harry has always been a little more forgiving and reasonable so I thought that it wasn't a long shot to have him forgive Hermione rather easily, once he heard her explanation.

You are right though, Ron and Harry weren't really concious of their actions, and would have been mortified had they realised that they were putting underage students in danger. This was never their intention.  Yes, you are right. Ron doesn't understand the Muggle world, and would never have realised how marijuana can make you feel like you dont' have a care in the world, but it's effects are only short term. Both Ron and Harry just wanted to enjoy themselves, and through no fault of their own, the party just got out of hand--it snowballed.

I think that Harry would feel that Spinners End, while being a dilapadated old shack, was still going to be a place that would be just for him and Severus to have as a safe haven, and a home.  Yeah, it will be nice for them to fix it up together, and deocrate, and then Harry will really feel  that he belongs there, unlike he felt at the Dursleys, or even Grimauld Place, like someone mentioned on another site.  Grimauld Place has some very painfull memories for Harry, that he's never really dealt with. Perhaps these types of things will come out finally, and Harry can deal with all the grief that is buried deep inside. As he continues to learn to trust Severus and feel safe with him, he will eventually open up to him. Maybe even about Sirius, even thought there was never any love lost between the two of them, Severus has got to realise that anyone that was important to his son, is important to him.

Yeah, Harry could pull some prank on Sev. Now, that would be funny.

Thanks, and I'm anxious for YOURS!!   I'm really excited for your next chappie of SC!!

Oooh, I'm so excited for the next chapter! I can't wait to get nice and juicy descriptions of the house (even if it is run down).

My favorite scene in this chapter was when Harry kissed Ginny and was getting cheered on by the boys of Gryffindor, lol. That just reminded me of high school all over again because there were always people making cat calls for that sort of thing, lol. Very nice.

I find myself a bit worried about Hermione. I hope she can pull through this thing alright.

Please update soon! I can't wait to read more!

    -P.G.

    Author's Response:

Well, it's going to be a little different than in the movie. This place will be in a muggle neighbourhood, but not in the middle of London, like in the film. It will be more in a quiet neighbourhood, sort of countryish.

Oh thanks.  That was fun to write too. I could just picture it happening too. You know how teenage boys are.

Yeah, poor Hermione is not doing so well. Torn between responsibilities and loyalties. Ron can be cruel at times, and hold a grudge, but maybe with Harry and Ginny working on him, he'll forgive Hermione, and see it from her point of view.

I'll try to update soon. Thanks.

Oh, and any new stories in the works from you?

Ha! Sev totally picked an old boot on purpose!

Great chapter, Pandora. I'm excited for the next, almost as excited as Harry. I can't wait to see Harry "going home" and find out about what Sev has in store for a personal detention.

    Author's Response:

Yeah, he did pick the boot on person! LOL! Just to irk Harry. :)

Thanks. Yeah, Harry is like a little child. He's never really had a home before, or at least not with people that cared for him.

Yeah, Severus has something interesting planned for Harry.  (Evil cackle)

I felt really bad for Severus, having to relive that memory, but at least i think Harry has a better understanding now of why he shouldn't drink, or drink to excess. It was a hard lesson, but I think he has learned it.

I also think he's starting to soften towards Sev and want to make him proud of him.

I liked how Draco stuck up for Harry, even if Harry doesn't know what to think of it.

It would be funny if Harry gave Sev a bottlecap!

    Author's Response:

Yeah, it was really difficult for Severus having to relive that, but I think that Harry needed a hard lesson here. Hopefully, he's now learnt his lesson.

I think you're right, he's starting to care for Severus, and wants to please him.

Yeah, I don't know if Draco and Harry will ever be "good" friends, but it would be nice if they weren't at each other's throats all the time.

Could you just imagine Snape's face if Harry actually gave him a bottlecap. I'd love to see that. Hmm...maybe he'll do that as a joke!
