Reviews For All the Difference
Author's Response: Thanks! When I first read HBP, I assumed that Snape was simply acting as Head of Slytherin, helping Malfoy to the hospital wing. Later, as my analysis of the Sectumsempra scene deepened, I kept wondering what EXACTLY happened on their trip to get Draco treated. I assumed also that Snape would play favorites, taking Draco's word over Harry's. But when Snape is so GOOD at discerning a lie, I started to think something else might have happened on that trip... Once an idea grabs me, well-- I just have to run with it. I don't know if this is what JKR kept tucked away from Harry, but I decided to let the pixies out of the cage! Thanks for taking the time to read and review!
Author's Response: How nice of you to say so! A "nice addition to the actual book" is such an amazing compliment! I began combing through HBP after Snape AK'd Dumbledore, trying desperately to figure out which side Snape was really on. I tried to fit all the Snape scenes into a cohesive whole, and aside from what Hagrid overheard, they all clicked into this one extended picture. The thing that kept nagging at my subconscious mind was the fact that Snape only mentioned lying and cheating-- and I kept asking myself, "Why?" After coming up with a hypothesis, I knew I HAD to develop it into a story! Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks so VERY much for taking the time to review!
Author's Response: Ha! Yes, I kept staring at the times posted on the shoutbox messages, thinking, NO WAY!!! Glad you got the chance to finish it! I took a couple of fiction writing classes in college, but I could never write at this level then, probably because it was my "own" stuff. HP gives me a wonderful medium to "practice" in, with real readers to inspire me to finish a piece (instead of writing for myself). The true challenge will be eventually to get back into creating my own stories and see if I can do better after working with HP fics. Here, I'm working with someone else's characters and setting, just hoping to do something original in each story. But I truly appreciate your compliments! And thank you so much for taking the time to say so-- again! ;-D
Author's Response: Wow! A "convincing extension of canon" is an AWESOME compliment!!! Thank you so much! While I was working on the story, I hadn't even defined my goal-- but you just did it for me! The moment I read your review, I knew I had succeeded in what I was hoping to achieve. Thank you SO much for taking the time to tell me so! I REALLY appreciate it!
Author's Response: Hee! And here I'd thought it WAS a story! ;-D No, I get it-- multi-chaptered! I actually wrote this as a stand-alone one-shot; if I continue the premise hinted at in the end, it would be in a separate story. I could probably get a ton of mileage from the interaction of Snape's portrait and Harry's return to school! Thank you so much for reading and reviewing!
Author's Response: Yes! That would definitely be a conversation and a half! For the time being, I'll need to put it on the back burner-- if I do write it, I absolutely want to do justice to it! I was mentally writing (working the kinks out!) this story for a couple of years before I finally pulled it all together while snowed in last winter. Glad you liked it and thanks for taking the time to tell me so!
You should write a story based on that premise of Harry getting the detentions only for lying and cheating, and him saving Snape's life. Or something along those lines. I love this idea. Original idea. Author's Response: Thanks! I've never seen anyone else take this approach with Sectumsempra either, but I really think I might be right. (Only JKR knows for sure!) Since neither Harry nor the audience sees what Snape does, it's left open ended. Canon Snape's attitude after that second round seems to be quite telling. He speaks "quietly"-- not sneeringly, sarcastically, etc. For ONE moment, he falls out of character. Then, of course, he rebounds. But that odd little lapse in attitude caught my attention and the story grew out of that. Glad you liked it, and thanks so much for reviewing! |
