Reviews For Differences Abroad
That being said, I’m not so sure I like how the American school system and the teachers in general are presented as superior to Hogwarts. It’s just a general tone that seems to imply that they know exactly how to deal with that snotty British kid, and that their educational values are far more sensible, to the point where Snape feels “chastised” by their principal (I don’t think Snape would let a complete stranger boss him around like that and be a good sport about it). Hogwarts has its weaknesses, yes, but I’m sure every Wizarding educational system has its good and bad parts, and its competent and less competent teachers. Don’t get me wrong, I like your story idea, your writing and your general plot, and yes, Harry deserves to be reminded that he is not “all that and a bag of chocolate frogs” ;). I just wanted to share my thoughts on some aspects of the story. Sita Author's Response: Thanks. I wanted him off his horse. As for the American school system being presented as being superior. I think it is more of an act on their part and maybe an unconscious one. I think each school system likes to see the systems that they consider to be their superiors fail. (As Britain's schools are always taunted as being so far above any of the American ones, the teachers are probably enjoying getting to take them down a peg in their minds. (Yes, I do know that even good, kind teachers do enjoy seeing that their supposed superior counterparts are indeed mortal! *winks*) As for Snape being chastised, I wasn't intending for him to be. I think he is more embarassed that his students do not realize that the US isn't apart of the British Commonwealth. He is more mortified at the discovery of knowledge that he didn't realize that his students have than actually being taken down a peg by the principal. At least that was how I intended it. I don't mind. I like discussing others opinions of the story and their views of aspects of the story. I wouldn't be in the field I am if I didn't realize that everyone reads and perceives situations, stories, and events differently. If you would like to share more thoughts, please feel free to contact me. Thanks for the review!
Author's Response: Thank you! I can too. Someone else on ff.net told me they were shocked by how these two acted, but I could see them in a specific set of circumstances acting like this, particularly when they think things are not going fairly. Honestly, they probably don't even realize that what they are doing is exactly what US citizens are accused of doing all the time, only with house bias added to the mix. No I agree, I doubt in any other school would the threesome how been able to get any with half the stuff they did and Ron and Harry would definitely never get away with what they just did to their teacher. We'll be seeing Mione at a later date. I agree, Harry should have never had any of that placed on his shoulders. He is a child and deserves to be protected. It seems like everyone was looking for a King Arthur type figure. Maybe I'm over analyzing though. Glad you enjoyed the first chapter and thanks for the review!
Author's Response: Thank you for the review. I've never seen Captain Courageous, so hopefully when I write the next chapter you'll tell me why it feels like it. *Smiles* Thanks again!
Author's Response: *laughs* I'll be working on it! Thanks for the review! |
