About me:

Hi, everyone.  I'm a long-time HP fan, but new to reading and writing HP fanfics.  Of course Harry and Severus are favorites, but I really like almost all the characters.

I'm a preschool teacher, and happily married with two children who also love HP.  Other things to know about me?  Hmm, I love horseback riding, reading, and spending time with my family and friends.  I love coming to talk with other fans on the internet, and I love reading fanfics.

Title: Chapter 5: In Care Of, Part Two 01 Sep 2007

What an amazing, beautifully written chapter! Dreams are so hard to write, for me at least, but you've done a wonderful portraying Harry's reactions to the potion.

I loved Harry's fretting over the learning the text and making potions, and how Snape realized the basis for that dream was the first potion class.

Another reviewer mentioned it first, but I too thought it was a brilliant touch how had Snape expecting Harry to recognize the asphodel reference and how he was insulted by the boy's confusion. It demonstrates how Snape really doesn't know very well how to establish relationships with people. Well, a good relationship, that is.

Although I think he and Harry come out of this experience much stronger and closer than before. I liked how Snape is finding himself a lot more affected by Harry's pain than he expected to be. He really does have a heart, he just likes to hide it.

And here's Luna! I can't wait to read more!

Author's Response: Dear Kristeh, boy are you not kidding about Snape not having the first clue how to go about connecting with people. Asphodel, I ask you. Still, he's been sort of nice to me lately---he's a lot nicer on paper, actually, although he's also a lot more insulting. Not sure how that works, but then, where Snape's concerned, I never am. Love, Harry

Title: Chapter 6: To Whom It May Concern 02 Sep 2007

Great chapter! Luna was wonderful! She really is one of my favorite characters. She's such fun, and so sweet, but totally off the wall.

She's a very good choice to be Harry right now, too. I think of all the characters, she can handle Harry's dreams in the best way. After all, she knew how to reassure him with the 'magic cupboard' so he could feel safe and relax.

Nice interaction with Snape and Luna, too. I like how she can see past his gruff exterior to the man he is inside.

Author's Response: Professor Snape isn't an easy person to get to know, but if you watch him closely you see that he reacts to things, and often the way he reacts isn't quite the same as what he says. He likes to keep his secrets, though, and I don't mind. :-) Love, Luna

Title: Chapter 7: For Your Immediate Attention 07 Sep 2007

This is a lovely, powerful chapter! Snape's ruminations about his feelings for Luna are believable and touching. I can easily see why he could identify with her, even though in some ways they're very much opposites.

I like how he's protective of her, and thinks that if she would only turn her mind to defending herself, she could do a spectacular job of it. She could, too. But that isn't how Luna's mind works. She might step up to defend someone else, but she will just accept poor treatment for herself.

And it was touching, to me at least, when Snape also recognized that trait in Harry, and connected Luna (a child that he can admit he's fond of and wants to protect) and Harry (whom he's learning to be fond of, even if he isn't quite ready to see that yet).

Loved the reference to "The Secret Garden". It's one of my favorite books, although I like "A Little Princess" better even if Sara is a tad bit too perfect.

The conversation between Dumbledore and Snape was great. I'd have loved to have seen more of their relationship in canon. Theirs is such an intense, private connection, and we see so little of it. You write them wonderfully well!

And Harry's awake and better! I was so glad that that horrible potion has worn off. But I wanted to shake Snape for leaving him so soon afterwards. Of course it's understandable, predictable even, that Snape would leave because he's so unsettled in his feelings about Harry just then.

I just wanted to hug Harry when he broke the potion bottle and wanted to cry. That poor kid has been through so much already, and he's so brave and strong about it all. I guess that's why he's a Gryffindor and I never would be. Of course he would rather take off to the infirmary than face Snape and admit to weakness (in Harry's eyes). He's got to be very unsettled around Snape too. After all that Snape has done to him, it's not easy to accept that things are changing.

Of course I knew Harry would run into Vernon Dursley, but I was surprised and delighted that Snape was so close on Harry's heels. I loved, loved, loved how Snape jumped in to protect Harry, and then went to comfort him! What an incredible moment! Please write more soon!!! Please!

Title: Chapter 8: Handle With Care 09 Sep 2007

Wow, I'm almost speechless after reading this chapter. I said the last one was powerful--and it was--but then this chapter hit me like a tidal wave. A beautiful, heart-breaking tidal wave, and I mean that as a huge compliment.

To see Snape comforting Harry in the corridor brought tears to my eyes. It was that beautiful. I was so glad that Snape was able to go to Harry, and that Harry allowed Snape to hold him and offer that comfort. I could read that part a hundred times and I still think I'd just as moved every time.

I liked how Dumbledore asked Harry's permission before healing him. Harry has been through so much, and most of it out of his control, that I think it's important to let Harry start having some control back.

Another good part was Dumbledore's line about how Snape trusted his (Dumbledore's) self-control more than Dumbledore himself did. Dumbledore has his flaws, but he is well aware of them and tries to overcome them. His burden is a heavy one, perhaps even heavier than Harry's because he carries the responsibility for so many other people's lives.

When Snape touched Harry's mind and saw Harry's image of himself, well, that was just heart-breaking, although not surprising. Harry has spent too many years with abusive people, and I don't think many people have really specifically tried to tell him that he is a wonderful person deserving of love and respect. To be fair, I think, many of the people who care for Harry have not realized how damaged he is.

And then thankfully, Madame Pomfrey was on hand to lighten things with some of her sharp comments. I had to grin at her lines. She's one person who is definitely not intimidated by Snape, I suppose because she knew him as a boy.

And the final scene with Harry and Snape was so real, so painful. I hurt for both of them. Of course Harry's reaction is understandable. Snape has spent five years making Harry into an enemy. Now it won't be easy to undo, but Harry is so forgiving that I think once he trusts that Snape really does care for him, he'll return it a hundredfold.

I can't wait for the next chapter!

    Author's Response:

I'm glad you noted that, about Dumbledore asking permission---that is his way indeed, to see that need in Harry. He is exquisitely sensitive. And no, the damage is definitely coming as a surprise to all concerned.

Madam Pomfrey will always have a cutting remark for Snape. He never sees her without a moment of wondering whether it was a wise idea to work with people who've known him since he was a child. :)

Title: Chapter 9: Please Respond 19 Sep 2007

Oh, I missed a chapter. I'm sorry. I loved this one. Harry is really very mature here. I admire him going to apologize to Snape, and how he can distinguish between Snape being able to care for someone, even if Harry thinks he doesn't care for him.

It was nice of Snape to talk with Harry about his mother, and Snape just a little bit drunk is fun to see.

It was another nice moment when Snape fixed Harry's shoes so they'd be the right size, and I loved how he smiled after Harry's back was turned.

Wow, every chapter just gets better and better! The scene between Dumbledore and Snape was just right--Dumbledore's not going have a yelling match in front of everyone, but he gets the point across.

It was great how Snape communicated wit Harry with his eyes, and I know it must have been awfully hard for him to stage that little scene with Dumbledore, too. Harry took the brunt of his shame and anger, but maybe if Snape stops to think about it, he'll realize that that's how he's made Harry feel in class all these years, and he wasn't just putting on an act.

The scene with the Slytherins attacking Harry and Luna took my breath away, and I was really worried for Luna.

Thank goodness Snape gave Harry the portkey, and Harry remembered it. I loved how when the kids appeared, Snape was already out there calling for Harry. Poor guy, he must have been scared to death for them. He just might insist on Harry moving in after this.

Now I'm very concerned for Harry--no telling what kind of injuries he's suffering from now. How am I supposed to wait for the next chapter? Please update soon!

Title: Chapter 11: Upon Receipt 20 Sep 2007

I loved it, again! This chapter more than lived up to my expectations. Everything was perfect, from Snape's self-reproach when Harry wanted to get up for water and telling him not to thank him for simple decency, to the final caress.

It's so good to see Snape finally letting himself care for Harry, and show it, too. Harry's response to Snape's admitting that he was 'concerned' (not terrified, of course) was so sweet. How could Snape resist giving him a great big hug right then and there. I suppose he'd use some silly excuse about Harry's injuries...

Snape's handling of the attackers was spot on. I loved the conversation with Gibson, and I certainly would never want to be on Snape's bad side. I can almost feel sorry for Greenleaf and Etching. Almost, but not quite. I do hope we'll get to some of their punishment.

    Looking forward to more!

Title: Chapter 1: A Surprising Sorting 14 Sep 2007
Reviewer: Kristeh (Signed)
Hi, this story sounds great! I particularly like how Severus was able to be open-minded enough to see that his preconceived notions about Harry were wrong, and to identify and sympathize once he suspected that Harry was abused.

It's a very interesting concept to see Harry sorted into both Houses, and to see that he's comfortable in Slytherin already. I'm curious to see how that will affect Gryffindor/Slytherin relations in the days and years to come.

Poor little Harry--he's had a rough beginning, but it sounds like he's found some supportive friends now, and I can't wait to see what happens next.

Title: Chapter 2: A Strange First Day at Hogwarts 14 Sep 2007
Reviewer: Kristeh (Signed)
Another great chapter! It's wonderful to see Harry getting the care he needs, and settling in to life at Hogwarts.

Of course he had to be disappointed and a bit nervous about missing classes right at the beginning, but Hermione is the best person possible to get notes from, and it sounds like Severus isn't going to let Harry get behind.

How nice that Harry is making friends and feeling more comfortable about being in both Gryffindor and Slytherin, and that Severus is being so encouraging and helpful. It's such a shame that he couldn't have seen the 'real' Harry in canon.

    Author's Response:

    hi Kristeh,

thanks for your reviews! I'm glad that you like my story so far :-)

Title: Chapter 3: Even Stranger Lessons 14 Sep 2007

Oh, no, what a cliffhanger! Harry really is amazingly powerful, isn't he? Transfiguring the cat just by wishing it. He may even give Dumbledore a run for his money once he's had a little training.

I can't help feeling a little sorry for him, though. Harry just wants to be normal. But considering his destiny, it's a good thing he is so powerful.

I felt so bad for Harry when he had to walk into Potions late. Severus has been very kind to him, but he is a strict teacher, and especially in front of other students, he's going to want to keep his fearsome reputation. Although if Harry had found the nerve to give him the note from Minerva, he might have reacted differently.

Harry's so used to cruelty and neglect from adults that of course now he feels uncertain around Severus and not sure what to expect from him.

I can't wait for the next chapter!
