About me:

I read and write Harry Potter fanfic.

My current fic is being posted at http://imuptonogood.livejournal.com, and is a Post DH story following Harry, Draco, the Weasleys, and a few others, after DH (ignoring the epilogue).  It is canon compliant, but I managed to rescue Snape.

I am an omnivorous reader when it comes to Harry Potter genres, but I prefer those where Harry and Snape can reconcile... eventually.

The summer Harry turns eighteen he sleeps alone in a shed at the Burrow. Will he be fit to return to Hogwarts for a seventh year of education? What does a last year at Hogwarts have to offer in the aftermaths of Voldemort’s demise? And how will Harry cope with the Headmaster in office?

Title: Chapter 20: Chapter 20 Appeasing stars 24 Jan 2021
Reviewer: ImUpToNoGood (Signed)
I’d been getting the feeling that I’d read this before, and indeed, I had started it in November 2015, when it was as yet unfinished.

I’m so glad to be able to come back and finish reading the story!

Love the appeasing stars... am curious how they affect Snape, and whether he gets angry at having his emotions manipulated.

It was particularly painful when Snape sent Harry to bed without supper.

One note: the killing curse is defined in the Harry Potter wiki: “When cast successfully on a living person or creature the curse causes instantaneous and painless death, without causing any injury to the body, and without any trace of violence.” So a near miss or an unsuccessful cast would not cause injury, and a hit on any part of the body would cause death. Part of Harry Potter’s fame is that he is the only person to survive the killing curse. So having an emergency room full of people who survived the killing curse is odd. Perhaps it was other deadly curses that were cast?

A note on odd word usage, I think in chapter 19: mount. You mount a horse, you climb a mountain, and usually take the stairs up/down to whatever destination, although if the stairs are steep, you might climb them.

Still loving the creative plot and world building.

Rita Skeeter’s maliciousness is truly heinous.

Harry is stuck with what he can and cannot reveal, and it is harming him and Snape both.

At this point, not even the fanon creation of a magical inheritance test would be enough to clear them.

I am very curious how they will get out of this mess. Truth needs to come out, but safely.

By the way, in canon, it was Myrtle’s death that fueled the diary horcrux creation.

    Poor Snape is falling apart!

Note: Legilimency is the name of the discipline, not the verb. You can no more “legilimency” someone than you can “art” them. In practicing art, you might draw or paint someone. Snape, a Legilimens (the word for a practitioner of Legilimency), used legilimency on Harry.

I don’t know how useful this is, years later, but I have some word choice notes.

You’ve been using arrested to mean stop. (Definitely a false friend for French speakers!) While it can mean that when used as an adjective (arrested movement), as a verb it means to seize (someone) by legal authority and take into custody, so I keep thinking the person is being taken to a ministry cell.

Also: Floo powder, not Flo powder. Flo is a woman’s name.

The story continues to be compelling. Snape’s habit of jumping to conclusions does not help his interactions with Harry, that is certain.

    Thanks for writing!

I really don’t like this Ginny. Her fear of experiencing anything but pleasure and joy makes her feel shallow, although I suspect it is due to the depths of pain she has experienced with Riddle’s diary. But her unwillingness to sort out her emotions, always repressing them or taking a shortcut, means she will never have the emotional maturity that Harry will develop. She will never be his equal.

I also don’t see that she makes any compromises for Harry, it is always him making compromises for her.

Even the fact that Harry has never taken her ambitions seriously is a mark against a successful relationship between them.

I do hope that either she grows up, or he finds someone to be a true equal to him.

Oh, and word note: to go mad is to go insane. To get mad is to get angry. (Very different!)

The Dursley family move house, and Harry is horrified to find that they are now living opposite his most hated Potions Master. Between Snape and the Dursleys, will Harry make it to the Burrow in one piece?

    Lovely! It's just right.

Summer fic fest. At one point, early in their life, every wizard needs to submit to surgery. The summer after his first year at Hogwarts, it is the turn of Harry Potter to do so. It’s supposed to be a trifle, but what is ordinary about the Boy-who-lived? Complications will arise. Ghosts from the past will appear and secrets people thought buried for ever are revealed. The question is, in the middle of this ordeal, will Severus Snape at long last find something meaningful to do with his life?

I very much enjoyed this story. I agree, it is the emotional bond that matters. Too many stories have Harry or Snape finding out s biological relationship, and instantly feeling completely different toward the other. I like that the relationship is not based only on blood, but also on the emotional bond that developed, and was hard won (with a little help from the appendicitis bond twist).

You asked about errors: a few that kept cropping up: in English, mounting is more frequently associated with horses, or with animals about to engage in procreation. It would never be used without a direct object in relationship with stairs (mount the stairs) and even that would be an unusual construct. Try "go upstairs" or "come upstairs", or "climbed the stairs". There were a few others but that was th one that stuck in mind.

Good writing - I'm trying to imagine writing something this good in German, which I was fluent in for many years - and I know I would fall short of this quality.

Thanks for writing. I hope that there is a sequel.

When James and Lilly died their son was presumed dead by the wizarding world. Few people know that Harry is still alive and has been raised as a Lovegood. When the Dark Lord returns it will be up to Luna, Harry, and Snape to save the day.

What an original idea. Completely fitting the Lovegood theme! I can't wait to read more of it.

I like that both Harry and Luna can see the beasties... So, does Harry really not know who he is? The hat knows...
