Before Harry arrives at Hogwarts, the faculty have a meeting and decide that Harry will need a mentor to help him adjust, keep him out of trouble, and make protecting him easier. They decide that this person should the Head of the House into which Harry is sorted, presumably Minerva McGonagall. But things, of course, don't turn out as planned, and Harry is harder to deal with than anyone expected. Nobody asked him if he wanted a mentor, after all...

NOTE: This story has a prologue. It is not necessary to the plot of the story, but if you wish to read it, it is called(predictably enough) 'Prologue to Life as Dictated by a Talking Hat'

Wow, that was a big step forward in Harry's trust of Snape-- I like that it's almost against his will and better judgement to trust Snape, but the relationship is growing anyway. It's also nice to see a Halloween at Hogwarts not overshadowed by the tragic demise of Harry's parents.

Author's Response: Yey! Glad you like, and yeah, things are speeding up a bit, now. Thanks for the review!!

A very enjoyable chapter-- who can resist kitten time? I kept expecting to find out the kitten had grabbed on and came with them when they apperated (it's a weird purple thing after all). Severus is really transforming into a parent-- it feels very realistic and I think it's as cute as Albus and Minerva obviously think it is. Harry is making some definate progress. That slap in the face was horrible, but in some ways so much better than the lie he was telling himself.

Author's Response: Glad you liked!! Yeah, the scene with the kitten was fun to write - lots more fun than most of the rest of the chapter. :0( But it needed to happen, I think. Thanks for the review!

I love Psycho Kitty. I also think that McGonagal did a great job helping and disciplining Harry-- that was quite a bit of progress. The scene with Snape was all one could ask for: awkward situations aren't usually filled with heavy dialogue, and the author once again shows a deft hand at putting just enough into the scene without overwriting. The cat will also be a good learning experience, giving him something to care for and recieve affection from.

Author's Response: Yey!! Glad you like!! LOL you made me blush in an empty room. :0) Thanks for the review!!

Title: Chapter 28: Dumbledore's Death Eater 24 Feb 2010

Is it wrong to enjoy Quirrel's sudden demise as much as I do? I think the dithering in cannon really produces a thirst for swift, decisive action. I'm a bit disappointed in Hermione-- not in the author's interpretation, mind you, but in the character's actions. At least she's admitting that she's lying to herself up front. Blaise doesn't disappoint, and I like the connection/relationship between Blaise and Hermione. Snape and Dumbledore's interactions are a highlight of the chapter... doesn't Snape ever notice quite how adolecent he's being? It's really funny to imagine the scene-- I always picture some physical tells, too-- a slouch or some hair flip to go with the attitude.

Author's Response: LOL I hope it's not wrong, 'cause I certainly enjoyed it. :0) And yeah, Snape tends to get just a bit childish around Dumbledore. :0)Thanks for the review!

Title: Chapter 30: Winner takes All 22 Mar 2010

Great chapter-- small, yes, but good to see some progress between Sev and Harry. I'm sad to hear that this tale might be wrapping up soon. I suppose all great stories have to end sometime and let's face it, it's illegal to chain authors to their word processors and make them write in exchange for fresh baked goods... more's the pity. Looking forward to the next chapter, whenever it comes.

Author's Response: Hey, glad you liked it, and thank for the review...I think. 'It's illegal to chain authors to their word processors and make them write' ...Was that a threat? It sounded like a threat. LOL anyway, seriously thanks for the review. :0)

Progress! Harry's not going to make anything easy, but it's great to see them moving forward. Snape's mental snark toward the headmaster is also great.

Author's Response: :0) Glad you like!! And thanks!!

Such a big step back in Sev and Harry's relationship... it's just painful. And Harry's now lashing out at friends, too? It's a great chapter, but it batters the heart.

Author's Response: Yeah, poor Harry. He's really beating himself up, right now. He'll figure it out...eventually...one hopes. :0) Thanks for the review!

Title: Chapter 33: Reality 16 Jun 2010

It's a great chapter. I'll admit to being a bit dismayed that it's going to end so suddenly... we'll just have to wait and see if this can be satisfactorily closed in a single chapter. The piece has been brilliant so far, I can only hope the ending is worthy of such a good story.

Author's Response: LOL, as it happens, it's not gonna be just one. It ended up being crazy long, so I split it. But it will be only two, plus MAYBE an epilogue. Don't worry, it has a relatively logical ending-point. :0) Thanks for the review!

Desperate to escape his guilt and nightmares after the third task, Harry transforms into a hawk by accident and ends up breaking both wings and suffering partial memory loss. He is found by Snape, and while the professor nurses him back to health discovers the truth about Severus and who are really his friends and enemies at Hogwarts.

I'm surprised and happy to see such a quick update. This is a warm and fuzzy chapter and it's rewarding to see Snape as an adult taking care of a child in trouble. It's the sort of chapter that makes me want to reread the whole thing again just to experience it more fully in context.

Thank goodness something is to be done about the cuff. I suppose it's Umbridge's hubris that she would do something so incriminating; as a bureaucrat, I always imagine her twisting the law rather than just breaking it.

    Author's Response:

Severus does have his moments, especially once he feels secure enough to express his feelings.  He really does care about Harry.  I'm honored you would re-read my fic even though it's not done yet.

Umbridge has a lot of hubris, she has gone mad with power and that is why she dared to put the cuff on Harry.

It would be hard to imagine a fate too horrible for Umbridge-- and her avian punishment fits into the story nicely. It was nice to see Sev and Minvera working together intelligently to solve a problem for Harry. Cannon seems to insist that adults are untrustworthy, unavailable, and somewhat oblivious to the children's needs. Fanfiction often takes a hard line against that, insisting that some adults are responsible and willing to protect children. Since Harry seems to be somewhat abused (it's less severe in cannon than fannon), I think a lot of readers object to the cannon message that kids need to struggle on their own because no adult will protect them. It's a dangerous message to give abused kids. That's one of the reasons this type of fic seems so moving-- because Harry shouldn't have to fix everything and suffer silently.
I like the complication with Ron and I can't wait to see Sev and Harry try to relate as two people (rather than just wizard and familiar).

Author's Response: Yes, I agree.  Umbridge was soo awful . . . as bad as Moldy Voldy in her way.  I agree with the canon message, since it seems that JKR wanted to have a self-suffiecine tboy hero who can solve things that most adults would have trouble dealing with.  It's sad, really, since every child should have one adult he can count on.  That's why I made it so that Severus is there for Harry and to a lesser extent so are McGonagall and Hagrid.  Because you're right, no child should be expected to save the world and suffer in silence.  I believe that one of the main components of a hero is that you can rely on others to help you and cooperation is more important to solve problems that bravery and those solo Charge of the Valkyries.  But that's me.  Thank you for reading!
