I will continue reading but to be honest, if I were cranky from RL stress, which happens often, I probably would have stopped here. The whole latter part of the chapter - the discussion about Draco's fate - pushed me way beyond the believability edge. There is simply no believable way to make either Albus, Severus or Harry behave the way they did in this chapter. I've turned the whole thing a dozen times over in my head and it just doesn't work. For Albus and Severus to believe Azkaban the only solution, for Harry to be the one to say things like - A. won't help him, on the contrary - when we have men, adult, mature men there at that moment to him being the only one advocating a different solution (especially in that constellation of events i.e. slavery spell, the paper revelation etc) to the coup de grace of Draco as 'slave' - you simply pushed too far and the believability factor went out the window. Just a tad milder, a tad more toned down and it wouldn't have been so grating, so jarring. Anyway, I do intend to read on, it's a good story and I understand this chapter was probably difficult to write as we are dealing with extreme situations and authors are then forced to swim outside of their familiar waters, so to say. Author's Response: Well, obviously, I disagree or I wouldn't have written it. It seems to me that there are plenty of times in canon when the adults were not particularly wise or mature or handled situations in the best way. Whether you continue reading or not is up to you, of course. Small decisions can change canon events. One small decision can change the fate of not only a small boy, but also an entire world. Fusion with Forever Knight. Minimal mentions of past child abuse/neglect. Complete AU, Pre-Hogwarts through Hogwarts years. No slash.

I am looking forward to seeing how this develops, how changed, and in what way, Harry will be. To be frank, one thing almost put me off, and that is the Ginny inclusion which is completely unnecessary, not to mention seems very artificial - you wanted her there, and it wasn't natural. Depending how this part goes I may yet give up, as I loathe Harry/Ginny stories and am yet to find one that has something better to offset it. Anyway, am still reading as I like it so far, but if we see more of Ginny, and soon ... well ... thanks for this so far. Author's Response: There are solid reasons behind the inclusion of the Weasleys at this point. The wizarding world is not tolerant of dark creatures, and Henri's birth identity cannot be kept secret forever. The betrothal is more for purposes of calming the populace than for a marriage to actually occur. Frankly, at this point, I'm leaning towards it *not* working and Henri marrying someone else in the end. There's time yet; Henri isn't yet at Hogwarts. Sickly and neglected by his caregivers, little Harry would not have survived were it not for the mysterious dark angel who watched over him, caring for him when he was sick. Harry never knew his name, until he attended Hogwarts and discovered a certain teacher bore a remarkable resemblance to his savior.

I am quitting here though, as I have zero tolerance for religion inserted into fics, especially this kind of God saved us all, etc, etc, etc. The good thing about HP is that religion is not mentioned really, so there is such a thing as reader applicability - anyone can read it, no matter what they believe in. This majorly, majorly crossed that line. "Of course we believe in him" - "God" forbid there are people who a)don't believe or b) don't believe the same thing ah? Not very nice at all. Well it was good while it lasted so thanks for that. Author's Response: Sorry you feel that way, this was a different approach I was using here, and there was never any mention that other wizards can't believe in other religions, just that Severus was Christian. He was refuting Petunia, not badmouthing other religious beliefs. There will be mention made of other religions as Harry speaks with other wizards and witches who are not Christian and there is no disrespect intended here. Severus simply is using religion to illustrate the point of forgiveness, which I think is a major concept of any religion. It isn't as if I've made him a priest who goes around spouting Bible quotes. You could always skip over the small bits of religion I've inserted, and there aren't all that many, the same way some people skip over CP parts in other stories, for this is mainly a fic centered around a father son relationship and the events in the Sorcerer's stone. As for Snape not being in character, he's not like canon, because in this story he was in charge of Harry from the time he was four and always when the child was ill and sick and at his most vulnerable. Snape does have a heart and is not evil, and after taking care of a child in that manner for years on end, I would think he would come to care and love Harry and be able to look past the fact that he was James's son. Canon Snape never had that chance, he only saw Harry at school and it was easy to resent the boy who was favored by everyone and who broke rule after rule and was never punished for it. But this Harry Severus only sees as an abused neglected child, Lily's child, whom he has promised to take care of. Unless one has a heart of stone, it would impossible for anyone not to love poor Harry. However that is your choice and thank you for reviewing. After destroying Dumbledore's office, Harry wakes to find himself in the past as an eight year old boy and unable to return to his own time...

The Dumbledore bit has me confused. The way it was written, he would have had no opportunity to perform Legilimency, and to get everything from Harry even that would have required time. He seems to know everything from the future, which I am unsure how to logically explain - believability is very important in a story, and this bugs me a bit. I am sure you have an explanation but I would have liked it to be included, not this rush of - oh Harry - bam, adoption. Way, way too fast. Also agreeing to adopt someone based on a little letter, with almost zero explanations is not too realistic. A note where Dumbles asks of Tobias to allow an abused child to spend the summer in their home, in hopes of getting better is much more sound. An adoption coming out of that situation is realistic. Tobias' actions also were more than a tad hasty. Adopt a child who disagrees by the way, and then assume an attitude problem out of the blue after five seconds of interaction is not good parenting, far, far from it. Anyway, the story has potential indeed, I'd love to keep on reading it, but the realism factor is important to me, and for now I am finding myself having to suspend disbelief which is not something I tend to do for a long time. Just take your time, work with the characters, let the story evolve slowly into what you want it to be. With the Dursleys away Harry is left needing a place to stay and the most unlikely candidate steps forward. A Harry and Snape guardian fic. Please read and review!

Am really enjoying the fic, loved the chapter as this was completely Severus, with a tad of kindness peeking through here and there, but just enough. We are still in the early days, so I am looking forward to seeing where you'll take this! Oh and I love poor Harry here, up and down, up and down, in his anxieties over what will happen. Thank you! Author's Response: LOL! I'm so mean, aren't I? I will update soon though, I'm so glad you are enjoying the fic! I write for my own enjoyment but I post for everyone else's. I have a clear idea where this fic is going and I really hope you continue to like it. Thanks for the great review! At the beginning of second year, Severus agrees to become Harry's guardian, little suspecting the far-reaching effects of this decision.

Oh the one tiny issue I have is I have no clue how old they are. I understood 12 from the beginning but you are mentioning things that are from older years in the books, so am just a tad confused. Author's Response: I appreciate your taking the time to review! Thanks for your kind words, and I hope you enjoy the rest too. :) They are indeed 12, but since this is an AU story, don't be thrown if some knowledge doesn't adhere strictly to canon timelines. :) Hope that helps! Harry has a new pet, Severus has a new pet, and there’s a first time for everything. Sorry for killing Hedwig again. Blame JKR for allowing only one familiar.

Great story, I loved it. No matter how strange I could actually see Severus getting attached to an animal in this agree, much more believable for some odd reason than to Harry. At least for the beginning. Thank you! Author's Response: Thank you. I am playing with the idea to write about the punishment. I just need to give Severus some time to think up something Slytherinly vicious *grin* Mila Harry Potter goes missing less than a day after being dropped on the doorstep of the Dursley home. One person must determine who his friends and enemies are as he protects the boy under the Headmaster's watch. Unusual favors are called in, unlikely friendships develop, and the shadow of betrayal grows darker...

Author's Response: I would be lying if I were to say that I am not disappointed in losing a reader. However, considering that you immediately judge an original character before having actually met said character seems to be a premature reason for not continuing with a story which gave off an initially excellent impression. While I do understand the caution of a reader when encountering original characters, it is a little harsh and extremely judgmental to dismiss such a character as pointless without having read anything about the character as a character. As indicated in the notes, she is not romantically attached to any of the characters. She functions in plot and in the interactions of other characters, and serves a completely logical function to the story's events. Had you chosen to continue, that would have become apparent. I'm sorry you feel that way and have chosen to discontinue reading. However, thank you for leaving a review. ~ RK On Christmas Eve, an unwanted child is left in a manger and found by a young Potions Master, changing both their lives forever. AU, implied child abuse, neglect, possible CP, Sev raises Harry.

BTW, kids speak in full sentences much earlier than two. I've noticed this in fanfics a lot and pretty much all the kids I know were capable of simple sentences already at one though girls do tend to be ahead of boys in this. Author's Response: Thanks and I like them too! Harry will be little for several more chapters and then gradually grow until he goes off to Hogwarts and this story will go up to his first year, to the end of the second term. So you'll have lots of chances to see baby Harry and his discoveries. Yes, I know, and I have several nieces and nephews who spoke much earlier than two. It really depends on the child though and some reviewers think harry's is too advanced as compared with children they know or have. But I patterned Harry after several of my own nephews at the same age, who happen to be really early talkers and very smart. And my mom tells me I talked at eleven months and by the time I was two could speak full sentences and never shut up. Here's a new chapter for you! :) Hope you enjoy it.
The tantrum was great too as Snape dealt with it perfectly. I think that's the only way to handle it. My friend has a child who was prone to this as a toddler - she'd throw herself on the floor next to the girl and start imitating her - cured her of tantrums after a few of those! Anyway, great chappie, really enjoying the story! Author's Response: Yes, I can see where that would work, but Severus wasn't about to humiliate himself in public that way, LOL! Thanks and I hope you enjoy the next part, which I've just posted. |
