Rather than allowing Harry to stay at Diagon Alley after he blew up Aunt Marge, the Ministry sends Harry back to the Dursleys. Harry returns to school after a terrible summer, to find that he's not the only one with this kind of secret. A student has been killed by his family. New screening measures are put into place by the Ministry: Every student must be given a medical exam and interview to look for child abuse. With Dumbledore facing an inquiry, Snape is entrusted with the task of making sure EVERYONE receives one.

Great story! I love how you described the atmosphere in the school after Neville's death. I wonder how Harry will try to get out of the exam... and how Snape will stop him. Looking forward to more!

You're doing a wonderful job with this story. I love the little details, like Harry waiting for Neville to come out of the bathroom or his clumsy attempt at staging a Quidditch accident. Everyone's very much in character, and the story flows really well.
    Looking forward to more!

Ron has to spend a summer with Snape and Harry and what a summer it turns out to be! Entrant in the 2011 Fic Exchange. Written for Snapegirl.

I'm really enjoying this so far. Your description of nine-year-old Ron and Harry is very realistic, tantrums and jealousy and fighting over sand bridges included. I also like your patient and mature Snape, and I had a good laugh over the annoying alarm clock - I'd lock it in a drawer at bedtime!
I'll admit I was a little surprised that Snape took the boys to church; I'd imagine wizarding culture would distance itself from Christianity, what with the difficult history between them. That's just a minor point though, I really like the story and I'm looking forward to more!

    Author's Response:

    Thanks Sita Z,

I am so delighted to hear that the description of Ron and Harry came through as realistic. I was pretty sure that both of them were sounding much oder than themselves, while Snape's vocabulary had shrunk down to mine. I do have to thank my beta, Wands for this, who took out the time to offer suggestions despite being busy managing the fic fest.

The alarm clock ... hmmm.... I think that Snape sets it at night when he comes to check on the boys before retiring for the night. He has to get his quota of entertainment from torturing someone! And really, don't blame my poor Lolly! The poor thing has to wake up all night keeping time so that it could wake up a sleepyhead at 8 a.m. and the longer the sleepy head sleeps, the longer Lolly's night shift extends. He is sleepy and just wants to go to sleep but can't till Ron wakes up. ;) It just wants Snape to tuck him in as well in the morning and a little lullaby in that glorious voice won't hurt! :)

About the church thing - it is an ode to Harry's muggle heritage. If Snape ever takes in Harry, it would be for Lily's sake and I wd imagine him trying to raise him the way Lily might have wanted to. Also, the books celebrate Christmas and the weddings are in the same style so I assume that the wizards have the same religions as muggles, specially the ones as old as Christianity/Judaism/Islam/etc. They could have a separation from Church but then, they would have come up with a church of their own.

But well, it could go either ways. Given that Harry is a half-blood, I decided that he shd know a little of muggle culture and Ron being a Weasley, cd only be encouraged by his parents. But it cd be either ways.

Wow! my response is longer than your review. :)

I am glad to hear that u cd read thru the enture 2nd chapter cus it's quite chunky and does not have any dialogue in between. I need to change the structuring of the chapter, or else, break it up into smaller chapters for easier reading.

Thanks a zillion times for leaving a review,

    Lia

Everyone thought Harry's scar came from Voldemort. But they were wrong. The scar was the sign of a rare & terrible gift, the power to call monstrous storms. A power that could save or destroy Harry unless he learns to harness it. Can Snape & Lily help him master his terrible gift? Or will he self-destruct . . .and take the world with him?

Title: Chapter 12: The Unexpected Malady 30 Jan 2012
Reviewer: Sita Z (Signed)
I found this story a few days ago and read it all in one go – it was great to get 12 chapters at once!

I love what you’ve done with the stormcaller theme, and that you present it as a very real danger to Harry and to others. The scenes in which Harry calls up storms in his altered mental state sent a shiver down my spine – I love how you described that.

As for Sev and Lily, I really like their relationship in your story. What you get in many fics is Sev adoring her from afar and Lily taking it all for granted, berating him for his past mistakes while ignoring her own. You portray a very different relationship here: Lily and Sev are equals, and both can give as well as take. A short but very poignant scene was when Sev remembered her favorite icecream flavor – of course he would, he remembers everything about Lily. But then it turns out that Lily remembers his as well, and yes, why wouldn’t she if he is as important to her as she is to him? That was lovely writing, very much said with very few words.

I also love the character of Theo Nott; usually, Squibs are presented as the weirdos of the wizarding world, not to be taken seriously (Argus Filch and Mrs. Figg come to mind!). It’s very refreshing to see a Squib character who is strong and capable, and has interesting talents of his own – I never expected the twist with the cold drake! I was wondering: Can he now transform whenever he wants, like an Animagus, or will it happen from time to time without his doing, like the werewolf transformation?

I also like the Malfoy family you show here; Draco’s little sister is a lovely addition, and it’s nice to see a Draco who is not a spoilt brat, but rather a rich but somewhat lonely boy who doesn’t quite know how to deal with slightly overpossessive parents. I hope we get to see more of him!

A few thoughts on corporal punishment: Personally, I don’t think it teaches kids anything except that a stronger person can easily beat on a weaker person if they so wish, and as both Sev and Lily hate bullying, I wish they’d give it some second thoughts. Please don’t take this the wrong way, you did put it in your warnings and it also fits well with the general approach to childraising adult wizards and witches seem to have, which is rather conservative and strict. What I’d love to see is either Sev or Lily reflecting on it, and maybe wondering if there may be alternative and more effective methods, but that’s just my two cents. All in all, it doesn’t detract from my enjoyment of the story.

As always, I love your writing and I can’t wait to see where you’re going with Theo’s transformation, Harry’s stormcalling adventures and Lily and Sev’s budding romance! I hope you didn’t mind getting all my thoughts in one review, but it seemed easier than leaving comments on the individual chapters.

Thank you for writing and posting, and I’m very much looking forward to more!

    Author's Response:

Thanks very much for your review, I appreciate how detailed you were.

I agree, Harry's powers ARE scary . . . and they're about to get scarier as the story progresses.

As for Sev and Lily, I also agree that most authors tend to portray Severus as the one who made all the mistakes, but that's not really so, since she chose to begin hanging out with the Marauders and never really offered an explanation for why she'd want to hang out with people who had tormented her best friend . . . and herself by association, I'd assume. Did she now think it was funny to play terrible jokes on Slytherins? I can't help but recall how she was sniggering behind her hand in that Snape's Worst Memory scene at poor Severus, even while she lectured James for his behavior. It sort of made me wonder if she cared for Severus at all or if it was all a show for her "new" friends.  But this Lily is different, as she realizes how her mistakes hurt Severus, and strives to move on with her life while still including him in it.  I think that any relationship would have to have some amount of equality in it in order for it to last.  That's what this version of Lily has, respect for Severus and an equal attraction to him.

Yes, however I see no reason why Theo can't do something useful for the magical world with his talent, and it's a rather sharp slap in the face to his pureblood relatives, who cast off him and his mother because he was a Squib and crippled to boot. Guess the joke's on them now that he turns out to have inherited the family talent.  Theo can transform every three days for a certain amount of time.

Oh, Draco will be back soon and you'll see more of him and Aradia too.

About the spanking . . . there won't really be any more of it, since Severus and Lily don't really use it unless they feel it's absolutely necessary.  They did use alternative methods when the boys got into trouble a few times before that, it was only when Harry almost killed Theo and Severus with his deliberate stunt that Lily felt he needed a spanking. As for Theo, Severus felt that because he'd broken his word . . . for the second time to both his mother and guardian, he needed more of a punishment than just scrubbing cauldrons or something.   You'll see in a few chapters that the parents can come up with alternatives that are--to their kids at least--worse than a few smacks.

AU of Deathly Hallows. Severus Snape didn't die in the Shrieking Shack, and is on trial as a Death Eater. With Albus Dumbledore dead, it falls to Harry Potter to aid in proving his innocence. Of course, things are never that simple, and there's another small problem that Harry has to take care of.

I love it so far! Can't wait to see how Snape will react when he finds out. I like Harry being a bit reclusive, and I can see why he didn't seek help even when left with a new-born baby. He's just used to doing things on his own.
Very good story, please update soon!

    Author's Response:

    Glad you're enjoying it!

At this point even I'M not sure how Snape will react (which is a bit scary, actually), so I suppose we'll find out together. Lol.

And yes, Harry's history with the Dursleys does play a large part of his little foibles with regard to trusting others with problems, but so does his history with the Wizarding world, as people have proven to be a bit wishy-washy with regard to anything concerning Harry in the past. Even Ron and Hermione had their "off" moments with regard to taking Harry at his word and not suspecting him of having some kind of nefarious (or in Hermione's case, maybe just foolish and rule-breaking) intentions.

Coupled with a year on the run and finding out just how many people really were in Voldemort's pockets (metaphorically speaking) certainly hasn't made Harry any more trusting or prone to ask for help before at least ATTEMPTING to do things on his own first.

I think that's going to be a major struggle for him throughout the story, and upcoming events aren't going to help. And that's all I can say without starting to spoil it. *zips lips*

    Thanks for the review!

What a horrible thing for the Ministry to do! Harry's right, they're no better than Death Eaters; even worse, in my opinion, as the Death Eaters never specifically targeted children.
Seems to me as if Snape has no chance of being acquitted; if they're executing innocent people, a former Death Eater will stand no chance... I hope Harry finds a way to break him out and rescue them both!
Great chapter, it left me on the edge of my seat! More soon please!

    Author's Response:

    Thanks for the review!

Even with the trial aspect, things were just a little too easy; it didn't seem realistic that Wizarding society wouldn't be reacting more to what had happened. I figured there would still be quite a bit of mass hysteria going on, and with other Death Eater trials happening 'off-screen' so to speak, it made sense that the breeding project would have been leaked.

I'm not sure Snape needs to be broken out--the actual Death Eater trials are being done by the book through the Wizengamot, but that's not to say that they're going to be all that impartial. A lot of people are thirsting for vengeance, and like in any conflict, a lot of time it comes out afterward that good people went down with the bad.

And you're right, with the exception of when they went after Neville and Harry as babies, they were more focused on Muggleborns as a whole than just the children--not that it really makes them any better, as they did slaughter whole families, right down to the infants. The babies just weren't usually the initial targets. Gotta keep that in perspective.

I plan to have the next chapter up by this weekend, though it usually takes the mods a day or two to validate new chapters, so stay tuned.

As far as Harry knew, it was all some sort of experiment that only Dumbledore could understand. He had no idea that the cat he had been given to keep him company instead of Hedwig over the holidays before his 3rd year, was in fact, his hated Potions Master in disguise.

Because of the Azkaban escapee, Sirius Black, Severus is sent to stay with Harry during the entire summer, never making a sound nor leaving the boy's side. He could not speak, nor could he defend Harry against anyone other than the criminal on the loose, however Severus does something that no other adult in Harry's life had done before...he listened.

I loved this chapter, especially the flashbacks! The birthday scene with little Harry was heartbreaking. And poor Sev... if Lily had only kept her promise, as he kept his.

As for moments I'd like to see, perhaps Harry could get sick, and Sev do his best to help him? I'd also love to see Ripper scared to death (well, not literally) of cat-Snape ;).

Lovely story, thank you for writing!

Snape loses control and severely injures Harry. Both of them must deal with the consequences. The question is, will they have to deal with them alone, or will they be able to work through them together?

"Perhaps a man with a prerogative to redeem himself in the memory of the mother would, in turn, give comfort to a child so justifiably desperate for it,” Dumbledore grinned at the other man’s unbidden expression of shock. “But when said like that, it hardly encompasses the depth of emotion I would expect when I see the person in question has cradled Harry Potter to sleep after a nightmare.” “I-I...” Severus scowled. “I was not cradling him.”

Great story, I really like your writing style! The letters made me laugh out loud, I hope Harry and Snape continue their correspondence for a while. It's so like Severus to include a homework assignment in his reply, and so like Harry to ask Snape to come over and play.
