Rather than allowing Harry to stay at Diagon Alley after he blew up Aunt Marge, the Ministry sends Harry back to the Dursleys. Harry returns to school after a terrible summer, to find that he's not the only one with this kind of secret. A student has been killed by his family. New screening measures are put into place by the Ministry: Every student must be given a medical exam and interview to look for child abuse. With Dumbledore facing an inquiry, Snape is entrusted with the task of making sure EVERYONE receives one.

    A nice vignette. I like it a lot. One little suggestion - the rhythm of the story might flow a little better if the longer paragraphs in the second half were split into 2 or 3 paragraphs. I'm not suggesting that you change a single word, but just reflect that lovely minimalist style of the first half in the second half.

Sirius does something to Harry that he shouldnt and he shatters the poor boy's last hope of finally having a family. He's lost and hurt and terrfied with no one to turn to.     Bravo! I agree with you about the challenges of present tense. However, you have used the strengths of present tense (explaining motivation and emotion) wonderfully here. Again, Bravo!
