Dark secrets and an even darker past threaten to destroy the boy on whom the entire wizarding world has pinned their hopes. Can Severus Snape find it within him to heal and accept the broken child of his nemesis, and in the process, ultimately heal and accept himself? (AU-ish, but follows canon. Severitus - mentor/adoption - WARNING: mentions sexual abuse, but no details)
Takes Place: 6th summer

Wow. What an intense cliff hanger! I didn't expect the attack on Snape by Bellatrix. He really did push her buttons. Looking forward to finding out what happens next!
Author's Response: Another cliffy... I'm sorry. I don't plan on them, but I don't know why my mind loves to end a chapter that way. As for Bellatrix loosing her mind, I wanted to drop a few subtle hints to possibly explain why dat B so cray cray. They may have been TOO subtle, so I'm thinking that a one-shot may be coming... I don't know... We'll see. Anyway, thank you so much for the review!! :)

After his and Harry's reception, I would have thought Dumbledore would have been keeping a closer eye on Harry while he was at the Dursleys. Will Dumbledore come in time to see what Harry is going through? Looking forward to the next chapter.
Author's Response: Dumbledore... Oh, Dumbledore. The man is very powerful, and his heart is definitely in the right place. But he places too much stock in his belief that people are ultimately good. It's a mistake he's made repeatedly throughout his life. In this case, he trusted the Dursleys to do the right thing, but yet again he was proven so very, very wrong. Let's hope he comes in time!! Thank you for the review! :)

I'm glad that help arrived. Poor Severus. He deserves a long rest after all he has been through. I look forward to finding out what happens to Dudley.

It is a sad story but it is a sad setting and time. I was glad that Harry was able to tell everyone of Snape's heroism and to let them know that, at the end, he saw the Severus that was behind the mask. And that he regretted never really knowing him.
Author's Response: bridgeportfox yes, I also think it's sad but really good, too. I'll translate another fiction from the same writer, where Harry and Snape talk at Christmas. It'll be a bit depressing, but you won't regret reading it! :)

That was a neat first chapter. It sounds like, whether he intended it or not, he made it to Hogwarts. I'm looking forward to finding out what kind of black bird he is.

A parrot! That was unexpected. I'll have to look up the palm cockatoo and see what they look like. Snape's reaction to the bird was fun. He couldn't hurt the parrot but still had his reputation as a scary (full-human) git to maintain. I liked that you had student Charlie Weasley talk to him, too, so we have some time frame for the story.
Author's Response: A friend of mine first showed me the picture of a palm cockatoo. She said dubbed it Sauron's Apprentice. It seemed like it had an appropriate exterior for being paired with Snape while at the same time a way more outgoing personality than the reserved professor. A recipe for fun!

I wonder if Severus will teach Erebus manners or just enjoy watching him annoy the rest of the staff? Interesting that Snape took his parrot along with him. Harry must have enjoyed destroying the couch. I wonder if he will be there when the Dursleys receive whatever punishment in coming their way?
Author's Response: Teaching a parrot manners, especially about food, is quite often an exercise in futility. I think Snape will be happy as long as Erebus learns not to mess with his food, leaving the bird free to annoy everybody else.

Erebus must have picked up quite a bit during the last two years of sitting in on all of Severus' classes. I can believe that he might be able to catch some of the things Snape hasn't seen. Poor Harry - it sounds like the only time he has been called a 'good boy' has been during his time as a bird with Snape. I wonder if Dumbledore is keeping the Dursleys in reserve to send Harry back when he is found?
Author's Response: Erebus is either very clever or very bored or both. Probably both. Parrots are very inquisitive and when bored will get destructive. If he's behaving in class then he must not be bored...

That was a surprise. It will be interesting to find out what constrictions there are on the oath Severus made. Dumbledore was taken by surprise and backed down, at least. I wonder where they think they found Harry?
Author's Response: A good surprise, I hope. :D

So Severus finally figured it out. It's a good thing he was talking with Minerva about it. She is on Snape's side when it comes to Harry's care. Though after Severus' vow, there wouldn't be any way that Dumbledore could sent Harry back to the Dursleys.
Author's Response: Yes, Snape definitely realizes that he has an ally in Minerva. Flitwick and Sprout too, although to a lesser extent.
