One unlucky hit with a strange spell. That's all it took to alter the course of Harry's life - and everyone else's life around him. Bound to stay within ten feet of each other, Harry Potter and Severus Snape have to learn to get along or die trying.

But sometimes in the hardest of times, one can learn things never imagined possible. After all, the past doesn't define the future.

Good chapter! I like how it's almost like Draco is a general marshalling the forces! Of course, he's really just passing on a message in order to help sick kids... but I can see this as a possible turning point in inter-house unity....

Dumbledore told Harry that he wanted him to let Slughorn collect him. But Harry soon learns that being collected by Slughorn really means. Will he be able to save himself or will he succumb to the man for the greater good? And what does Severus have to do with it all? Was he too 'collected' by Slughorn and will he be able to save Harry before it's too late?

I'm glad they're not going to Dumbledore--but now I'm worried about what Harry's going to do!

Sequel to Those Who Grieve. Harry is recovering from the Dursleys' abuse and spends the summer after his fifth year with Severus at Spinner's End. Severus is also recovering from his time as a Death Eater, and Harry is slowly helping him heal.

'You're actually quite likable once you get past the unlikable part.'

    Love that line.

When the saved hates the savior, magic demands justice and forms a slavery bond. Severus has saved Harry's life one too many times and the bond has formed, beyond anyone's power to dissolve.

I hope that Severus is not the only one with nightmares this night. I hope that Sirius is having some as well.

Author's Response: Oh, that is a very interesting point.  I may just investigate that notion.  Thanks for the idea!

Quite a lot made me angry in this chapter. The fact that Pr. McGonagall now apparently views Harry as less than human is near the top (a less-than-human that should be treated "kindly," sure, but still less than human). Granted, it can be hard to gainsay the views of our culture/upbringing (especially those we just assume are correct, as seems to be the case here), but I would have hoped that knowing a human who is also a slave might have forced her to question it.

Possibly the part that made me most angry was when Sirius protested that Severus hadn't been a child, as if that made the rape okay. Sirius plainly hasn't given any thought to just *why* child rape is so heinous (not that I would expect him to). It's not merely because children are too young and don't have the understanding that an adult has, it's because they are the most vulnerable, least able to defend themselves, and have the least recourse. Um, like a slave, Sirius?

Just wondering how Sirius justified it to himself.

    Author's Response:

McGonagall's reaction is meant to show that even the best people in society are influenced by the views that they've grown up with.

Sirius, on the other hand, is willing to believe whatever is convient for him.  Severus was his peer.  Harry is a generation younger than Severus.  Sirius loves Harry, and can't stand to see Harry put through what he put Snape through.  In a different scenario, it might be the difference between you shooting someone, or watching someone shoot someone you love.  I don't think Sirius' real objection is so much that Harry's a child but rather that it's Harry.  If this were happening after Harry had graduated, and Sirius were still alive, he'd have the same reaction, but just not play the child card.  Sirius is seeing how karma works and how his chickens truly have come home to roost.  There are any number of things that can be rationalized because society says its okay, and that's how Sirius justified it.

But in reality, you are absolutely right.  There is no real justification.  Sirius' objections were not something that is to be condoned.

Snape is gaining a lot of credibility in my eyes. Although I do think his suicide attempt was at least in part to relieve his own depression and not merely to free Harry, his depression is only so bad because Harry is his slave in the first place.

Hope they can find a way to solve this thing, but I have a feeling it will get worse before it gets better....

Author's Response: Your assessment of Snape's mental state isn't wrong.  He'd be much better able to cope with his depression if Harry weren't around, and he feels extremely guilty about the situation.  Hoping his death would remedy the wrongs he caused, he was willing to pay that price.  You're also right about things getting worse, yes...

    Ha, serves Sirius right.

Harry would always remember it as the summer he got to go to camp and forever escape the Dursleys. Severus would remember it as the summer he allowed himself to stop being blind. In response to the Camp challenge by JAWorley.

"Vernon always suspected that there was somehow magic involved, because who ever heard of a government official checking in every other day all summer long?"

---Serves him right! I like that low-key but amusing form of justice.

    Great fic!

Harry has a secret, and his magic helps him hide it. But all secrets come out sooner or later; they are easy to uncover if you know what to look for.

I like little details you put in this fic, such as the fact that the glamour that Snape gives Harry makes him look even more like James than he already does. I hope by the end that Snape eventually sees him for his own person.

What in Merlin's name does Potter think he is doing with that copper basin? Snape does some reluctant investigating while on guard duty at Privet Drive.

Great story! I liked how the ending was a bit ambiguous about whether or not Snape will ever learn the true story of Harry's "spoiledness."
