When Harry finds an injured Snape on his doorstep and must hide him from the Dursleys, he has no idea that this very, very bad day will be the start of something good. Harry and Snape are thrown together by annoying relatives, a series of strange dreams, and Voldemort's latest hunt for Harry, but their greatest challenge may well be surviving each other. This will be a long summer unless the two can find a way to work together. A slow-burn enemy-to-mentor story. Alternate 6th summer (and part of the school year): post-OotP; ignores HBP and DH.

chapter 54: May as well give Snape as many reasons to be angry with him as possible, he thought numbly as he pressed his thumb to the small gold ring and felt it heat up on his finger.
Author's Response: Ah! Thank you!! It's fixed now! :)

I'm re-reading and it occurred to me to ask - between midnight conversation and first occlumency lesson there were, what, 10 hours? So when did Snape have time to do his extensive research, consult with colleaques and brew a potion? Did he do it earlier, perhaps after the apology?
About the current events, I'm depressed and that makes me crap at reviewing but I loved reading.

Hi! New rules about reviews prompted me to finally register to the site as this story definitely deserves a review. I made it into an audiobook and simply loved listening to Snape's inner voice. His insistance that he doesn't care about the brat-who-lived while behaving like a parent is hilarious. I also love the angst with Moody. I can't wait for an update.
Harry, Blaise, Ron, Hermione, and Theo decide to check out what Dumbledore is hiding through the trapdoor.

That's too bad there's no more... It isn't abandoned, is it? I like this story a lot. Your Harry is very different than in most other stories, but his upbringing explains it. I don't understand why your Lily would be disliked, her relationship with Snape has a ring of truth to it. I can't imagine their marriage being easy. Conflicted Snape in his parental role is very sincere. I like it that he was a decent parent even if he was holding back emotionally. That's a difficult situation and poor Harry is a victim of it. Children need to be loved and cherished. I also like the action bits, but I think Lily's stand on keeping Harry in the dark is very naive and it has already put the boy in danger once.
Petunia finally has an excuse to get rid of Harry, who finds himself in another abusive home. But then there is Severus living nearby, who - at first reluctantly - will try to help the boy. Will they find common ground?

Is this any way to finish a fic? Hurry up with the sequel, will you? I just discovered this yesterday, and I must say the story is intriguing and I hope you won't make us wait too long.
I love your Sirius, it's so refreshing to see him cast firmly in Harry's corner. Tobias - you have an alcoholic's priorities spot on, Harry really has the worst luck, doesn't he? I hope the man isn't so brain-damaged yet that he can't change his path. Snape - I don't wonder that Harry can't trust the change in treatment, it's so stark, and I suspect that Severus' fear and relief at finding Harry safe will explode rather violently, having adverse effect on the progress they've made. Theo and the muggle teenagers - I loved the interactions and building friendships. Malfoy - you have me intrigued. Eileen and the dept. of mysteries - after this ending I feel like I have an incessant itch I won't be able to scratch for a while. Tommy is Theo's father, I suppose?
Can't wait for more [if it wasn't clear]

Hey, I finished reading this story last night and I slept on it, pondering what I wanted to write in this review, and then this morning I couldn't resist going right back to the beginning. It has been a while since I read such a well-written and interesting story. I understand that you are not a native speaker of English, but it doesn't hinder the story at all. Your language and grammar are mostly correct and colourful. There are many stories ruined by sloppy grammar, but yours is not one of them. I enjoy your writing style very much, the pacing of the events is very well-done and the balance of angst is just right. About the story itself, Snape was so deliciously atrocious at the beginning that I really wanted to smack him! There's this bit where he thinks that he'd never allow a child of his feel unwanted while at the same time he's doing exactly that to Harry. I cannot even imagine the emotional strain Harry is under throughout this story, dreadful! The very slow pace of Snape's heart thawing is very believable, many years of active hatred cannot be overcome in one day as often happens in fanfiction. My favourite scenes off the top of my head: accidental magic in Snape's quarters, the grounding, Ian and Harry studying together, Ian's impersonation of Dudley is good, too, although I can't say I liked the behaviour, Snape boggart and Lupin's reaction. I don't think there were many bits I object to, I think, except that the story hasn't been updated for so long. That fact is heart-wrenching.

Snape says at one point that Sirius can't kill him. Why not? Voldemort killed James Potter. Could you explain that? Truly, Sirius deserved every day in Azkaban.
Author's Response: I suppose "can't" might not be the right word. Sirius *can* kill him, but there will be reprecussions for it. As a slave, Sirius could have killed him and the law wouldn't have cared. Now, though, Sirius has no more legal power over Snape, and evne though he's already a wanted criminal, it's Dumbledore who's keeping him out of Azkaban for the time being. If he pisses off Dumbledore by killing his spy and potions teacher, then Dumbledore could readily decide to abandon Sirius. So Snape is in a much better position now, being protected by the law and Dumbledore.
