You had me running the gamut from laughter to tears in this chapter. I know life is busy for you but I do hope that you can update this story sometime.

Snape had loved Lilly. And now Lilly was gone - but not toally. A little tyke with large emerald eyes was still there. All what Snape had to do was steal him.

Warning: The Story contains corporal punishment.

This was so sweet. I loved seeing Sev asa loving Daddy and toddler Harry was just adorable. It's going on my faves list.

Snape punishes Harry for the debacle at the Shrieking Shack, and gets far more than he bargained for.

Excellent beginning. Harry must be *really* upset not to have yelped when he sat down on Sanpe's couch, though. I agree that taking a switch from the whomping willow definitely made the punishment fit the crime. I like the way you gave us both Snape's and Harry's thoughts throughout the encounter, particularly Snape's noticing all the things that weren't a "normal" response. Harry initially thinking the willow switch was for a potion was perfectly reasonable as he'd never faced that kind of punishment before. And his reaction to Snape's order to "Stop this nonsense at once. Now, boy!" was exactly right. He would certainly respond to the words "Now, boy!" in particular as Vernon uses them so much. I am definitely looking forward to the next chapter and the continuation of this story. Bravo and good job!

Author's Response: Thank you very much for your kind words. I was thinking Harry would be used to supressing his pain responses in the interests of 'not whining', but I apprecaite that you pointed out an apparent plot hole, because these things are easy to miss.

I like how you are developing Severus as a complex characterin this story. So many writer's keep him the flat, 2-dimensional "evil git of the dungeons" who behaves nastily for nastiness' sake. But you have avoided this beautifully. His reactions to Harry's behavior quietly tell the reader that there are reasons for hte way Severus has developed his public persona. And that he's seeing things about Harry's ife that he never expected to see--things that Severus has unfortunately, had personal experience with. You can see him adding everything up and not liking the answer he is coming up with.

Dumbledore had better watch out, I think.

    Bravo!

“I am wondering who it is you are trying to save.” For all that I do not like the way Dumbledore manipulates people for his own ends, I have to say he has a point here. I think Severus is trying to save himself and to make up for not being able to save Lily, to do domething to demonstrate his repentence, to make amends for his ill considered choices as a young man that in his mind led directly to Lily's death. Rather self centered of him in a way, isn't it? But perfectly human. Young people are self-centered in the way they respond to the events that occur around them. Guilt also has a lot to do with it. He wants to be able to go back and change things so that Lily will be saved but even with magic, it is impossible so he is assigning Lily's role to Harry, now that he is actually looking at the boy and seeing that he isn't just a clone of James Potter.

Of course, given Dumbledore's typical manipulation of people and his knowledge of the similarities between Severus' childhood and Harry's childhood, it wasn't vvery hard of him to set things up to get what he wants: Severus in a parental role for "The Boy Who Lived". After all, Severus is really the only person around truly capable of teaching Harry what he needs to know to defeat the Dark Lord and everything that Dumbledore does leads to that end. There may be some feelings of affection involved but the way you've got this written it feels as though the emptional relationship is going to be between Severus and Harry in spite of the Headmaster's machinations.

I like the level of description in both the characters reactions and the setting. I also like your subtlty in giving Severus and (your readers) the clues to what is really going on with Harry rather than dumping everything out in a "laundry-list" of too much information at once. You'd created an excellent piece of writing here.

As for whether it will be difficult to persuade the Dursleys...well, I'm sure the Potions Master will manage in his own inimitable way. Once again, bravo!

Oh that was right out of Le Miserables! The Dursleys are even worse than the Threnardiers in my opinion. I hope you realise that I was trying to fit their dialog to the tune from the scene in the show.

Poor Harry; he really has had a wake-up call that he didn't expect in the least, hasn't he? I know he's convinved that Snape is going to kill him but I'm sure that Severus will keep it discipline and not let it turn into physical abuse (especially if you are working with the background that he was an abused child whilst growing up).

It makes sense that the taking of guardianship would be essentially an unbreakable vow. I bet Harry is going ot latch onto the idea of "You vowed to protect me, not hit me!" at least once. And I'm sure that Severus will inform him that the corporal punishment is meant to do exactly that: to keep him from behaving in ways that will get him hurt or killed.

An excellent chapter and you picked the perfect place to end it. A nice little cliffie!

Also, tell please tell Aragog that I have no intention of disappointing him, given that I think he could give Tolkien's Shelob a run for her money.

    Cheers!

    Author's Response:

Oh no, don't give me ideas! Do you think I could work a little Sweeny Todd in? "It's Snape, have a little Snape..."

I think Snape knows the limits. I also think Harry is going to test them at every oppertunity, because, as a teenager, he already knows everything anyway.

    Thanks for the review.

Very nice chapter. I liked how the Professor asked if Harry understood what in loco parentis and Paterfamilias meant rather than making the assumption that Harry would know the terms. I also liked it that Snape was straightforward with what the rules and consequences of breaking them were. Very nicely written and you didn't go overboard on hte angst, which I really appreciate.

Hee! Good ol' Sev! He blackmails with the best of them. I can easily visualise Harry covered with the Dragon Mites. And I would think that if you were the slightest bit ticklish, having Dragon Mites crawling all over you would be sheer torture. Excellent chapter!

When Vernon discovers Harry can't do magic during his first summer back from Hogwarts, he loses it when the cake falls on his clients. Completely AU version of the Severitus challenge beginning during the summer after first year.

Nicely written, and I look farward to seeing the Dursleys get what is coming to them. Severus is great in this and thank you for not making Arabella a useless cariacature. I'm sure I'm not hte only one who wants to wring Albus' neck right now. I'm looking forward to chapter 2 very much.

Author's Response: Thank you so much, I love the minor characters in the books - Arabella, Trelawney... You'll see many more pop up. I have to say that DH changed my opinion of DD - wait until Sev confronts DD. Muahahaha.

This just keeps getting better and better! I too want to find a way to award Hermione House Points, about 100 of them because she told Ron off so perfectly.

I like the way Draco is supporting Harry and the fact that Hermione is a real, true friend who doesn't let jealousy ruin things. In fact, all the characters are well-drawn and their thoughts and words are wonderfully expressed.

And Snape, as usual, is fabulous.

Author's Response: Yeah, I would like to award her 100 points as well, but this is Snape - she's lucky to get 10!
