The man leans over the table and presses the cup of tea into Harry’s hand. “Here, have some more. Perhaps it’ll make you feel better.”

Harry doubts it but accepts the cup nonetheless and takes a few mouthfuls. Moments after he’s swallowed the bitter brew he begins to feel cold and his vision blurs.

Sometimes safety takes on a strange meaning, but Harry always knew cupboards were safe. He just never knew that he would one day associate Snape along with cupboards and the safety and sense of security they always brought him.

    I love this one-shot!

    It has always upset me that in HP canon, Sirius NEVER took responsibility for his actions against Severus that night in Sixth Year. He is remarkably sociopathic in a lot of ways: very self-centered and mono-focused; an inability to empathize with other people--to put himself in the other person's place--and no true sense of right and wrong.

    I truly don't think that it ever crossed his mind that he was turning his friend into a murderer and giving Remus a death sentence. He'd have been upset if Remus had been executed, but I truly doubt that he would have recognized, much less admitted, his own culpability had Snaped died that night.

    And his excuse "We were 16 and stupid" made me so mad.

    Er, sorry about the rant. *sheepish grin*

    Thank you for writing this. It would have been nice if Sirius had done this in canon. Thank goodness for excellent fanfic authors like yourself, so that we can see the scenes that we wished had happened in the books.

    Very well done! I particularly like how him being rescued by Severus isn't an instant cure for years of abuse.

    And I think you've done a great job in keeping Snape's character true to the books, but his reactions to Harry changed just enough due to his recognition of what has been happening to Harry over the years since Lily and James' deaths.

    By Grabthor's Hammer, I've never read such a riveting fic in the two years I've been reading Harry/Severus genfics on this archive. I literally could not stop reading this until I got to the end.

    Erin is an excellent OFC who doesn't descend into the irritation of Mary-Sueishness. I love how you have her standing up to Severus when he's at his worst, and while the actual number of days that they've known each other is rather short, I have known a real life couple who, due to the circumstances in which they met, snarled at each other horribly, yet, within two weeks, they'd realized that they were desperately attracted to each other. So I don't find the quickness of the development of Erin and Severus' relationship unrealistic.

    Poor Harry.... I find the string of nasty events happening around and to him rather canon, actually. It certainly seemed in the novels that anytime Harry had something good come into his life, he lost it before the end of the book--or, in the case of Ron's friendship, it was challenged by jealousy and anger for a significant amount of time before resolving and getting stronger.

    Gosh, I could go on and on about this. *grin* I have truly loved this story, and while it has been three years since it was last updated, I will continue to hope that you will return to it. I want to see Harry, Severus and Erin become a family (I did catch that bit where Erin almost admitted to herself that she wants to be Harry's mum!) even more than I want to see the end of Voldemort!

    When you decide to come back to this, please know that you've got a new dedicated reader who will be thrilled to see more of this story.

    (BTW, I'm a 50 year old mum of five kids, and I have to thank them for dragging me into the Potterverse back when HP and the Goblet of Fire came out. So nice to see fic written by another mum!)

    Absolutely fantastic! I've spent the last four nights reading AYLNO and ASLNO and am just utterly gobsmacked at the excellent characterization, plotting, and technical writing expertise in the two fics. I'm most impressed at how you made Draco Malfoy's falling in love with a Muggle totally believeable. And you have made Snape change and yet still be Snape--something that a lot of the "Snape Adopts Harry" fics don't get quite right.

    Frankly, as far as I'm concerned THIS is how Year Six and the summer after happened. It took me ages to get through HBP and TDH and I admit to not being happy with how the canon stories went at all. Where I read books 1-5 several times, it was an effort to finish reading TDH, and I was, frankly, disappointed by its ending. But I know that I will not be disappointed by the forthcoming sequel to ASLNO, whenever you publish it.

    Well done seems a totally inadequate accolade for your stories. Thank you (and your co-author and beta team) for many hours of excellent reading!

They decide that this person should the Head of the House into which Harry is sorted, presumably Minerva McGonagall. But things, of course, don't turn out as planned, and Harry is harder to deal with than anyone expected. Nobody asked him if he wanted a mentor, after all...
