Before Harry arrives at Hogwarts, the faculty have a meeting and decide that Harry will need a mentor to help him adjust, keep him out of trouble, and make protecting him easier. They decide that this person should the Head of the House into which Harry is sorted, presumably Minerva McGonagall. But things, of course, don't turn out as planned, and Harry is harder to deal with than anyone expected. Nobody asked him if he wanted a mentor, after all...

NOTE: This story has a prologue. It is not necessary to the plot of the story, but if you wish to read it, it is called(predictably enough) 'Prologue to Life as Dictated by a Talking Hat'

    Author's Response: Yeah he'd probably get tired. Then again, Snape WANTS him to talk, so for all we know he'll egg him on. (I don't know yet. I don't write this story - the characters do.     Author's Response: Yeah, I feel worse for Sev than for McGonagall, but she's putting a lot of effort in, too. I'm glad you like the room of requirement - I was thinking like 'hmm...you're supposed to have neutral territory for this sort of thing (discussions, therapy, whatever)...where in Hogwarts would work as private neutral territory? And, as you saw, came up with the room of requirement. Thanks for the review!!!

    I wanted to have both ways, to show that yes, wizards DO have laws that they should and do follow, and consequences for those who really break them.
