Slytherin!
Before Harry arrives at Hogwarts, the faculty have a meeting and decide that Harry will need a mentor to help him adjust, keep him out of trouble, and make protecting him easier. They decide that this person should the Head of the House into which Harry is sorted, presumably Minerva McGonagall. But things, of course, don't turn out as planned, and Harry is harder to deal with than anyone expected. Nobody asked him if he wanted a mentor, after all...
NOTE: This story has a prologue. It is not necessary to the plot of the story, but if you wish to read it, it is called(predictably enough) 'Prologue to Life as Dictated by a Talking Hat'

- I think Sinestra just learned a valuable lesson. She will probably let Harry be for awhile, as she has suddenly realized that there is something going on with Harry that she doesn't understand. I wonder if she has realized yet that SHE not Harry is the problem. She was out of line when she decided to call Harry a rat, which I do believe is name-calling and juvenile. Harry was trying to be polite, she was the one that didn't want to maintain a neutral stance. In any case, she had no right to attempt to drag Harry anywhere, particularly not to Dumbledore. Next time she will keep her hands off...or lose them and her life.
I'm glad that Harry did talk to Severus at least a little. Now, Severus knows that he is having an impact upon Harry and that Harry is beginning to depend on him as a source of support. Harry now knows that Severus can be hurt by him, which tells him that Severus must care about him.

- Good job, Severus! And I do mean that. He was right about not pushing too hard. His show of restraint will help Harry to trust him enough to eventually tell him what he needs to know. I know that he isn't angry at Harry for what happened and hopefully, Harry will realize that and lose some of his fear.

- Poor Harry! He's gotten so used to all of his dreams turning to ashes that he's given up on them entirely. If he keeps up on this route, he's going to end up bitter, sad, alone, and friendless. It's rather unfortunate. I hope that someone will be able to break down the wall that Harry has built out of the fear of eventual rejection and loss, and soon.

- All Severus has to do is tell Harry that he DOES want him...more than anything. Those are the words Harry needs to hear. No excuses or reasons, no trying to explain that he doesn't want to hurt him, just baldly tell him he wants to be his father. Better yet, come armed with adoption papers!

- I understand why Severus felt the need to tell Harry about his role when it came to the deaths of Lily and James and am totally unsurprised by Harry's reaction. I am really happy that Severus finally told Harry how he feels and that he wants to adopt him. He has finally given Harry the one thing he truly wants, a family that loves him.

- So far my favorite part is what Severus means in Parseltongue, but I am finding this a wonderful story beyond that. I hope that Harry will be able to worm his way into Severus' heart at some point. I wonder if the portrait of Slytherin could help teach Harry to speak English?
