Being sent to stay in a psychiatric ward at St. Mungo’s isn’t exactly the most enjoyable way to spend a summer, so naturally, Harry’s pretty angry when he finds out that’s his destination, regardless of whether or not it might be good for him. Facing a full summer of being cut off from the Order’s plans, Harry’s even taken to envying Snape, because at least Snape knows what is going on. But when Harry arrives at St. Mungo’s and discovers that a fire has changed his destination from the teen ward to the adult ward, everything is turned upside down. Enter his roommate - suicidal, depressed, and none other than Severus Snape. They are both willing to bet that their summer will be a total disaster, and maybe it will be, but even the surest of gamblers are not always right.

Great chapter! I'm still angry at harry and severus' impotence against the press and the narritive that will follow them forever, all due to an asshole with entitlement issues and self-serving gossip mongers.

My heart breaks for them but I'm happy harry was in a safe place to break down.

Author's Response: I do rather hate that Auror ... and I can't even blame someone else because I wrote him, haha! Well if you hate him then my job is done, haha! Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts!

Gah! Another great chapter. You have captured the emotions so well. I'm happy Harry can at least recognize a trigger even if he doesn't know why he is triggered.

When Harry mentioned going back to school, I thought he has much more courage that me to even contemplate Hogwarts as a safe place. On the contrary, it's a hostile environment.

I can't even imagine going back to that hell hole. I think i would be making plans to attend another school, like so many children do in these situations. It would not help his healing (IMHO) to return to Hogwarts, it would set it back. It would only help DD to have Harry and Severus close at hand.

But then again, this is the HP universe and Hogwarts is a main character where all the action happens. Still, I don't see any benefit in returning. The students are cruel, immature monsters that would take delight in tormenting them both. They have never been punished in the past for their bullying of Harry, they have been taught it's perfectly OK. No reason to believe it would change now given the personalities involved.

It'll probably be worse from those feel they have been betrayed by their Hero, that's he's just as human as the rest of them and can't save them. Learning that they'll have to save themselves after building up the image of a shield that protects them (no matter their actions) from evil would result in quite a bit of personal fear I suspect, lashing out at the one they view as the cause of that fear.

    They need a fresh start.

Whew! I think I was triggered by the thought of returning to Hogwarts :-) Please forgive me and ignore my rant. I love this story and can't wait for more!

    Author's Response:

Hello, teriwright! :) I don't mind the ranting in the least - I totally understand what you're saying! You make an excellent point, and I think it would have been a very intriguing direction to take. I think the reason I chose Hogwarts to remain Harry's school was as follows: To start, I'm not sure if there are any other schools for magic in the UK, and yes, you are very right that a lot of Harry and Severus returing is Dumbledore's influence. Given what we know about other magical schools, their other options of similar academic level to Hogwarts were Durmstrang (ahh, nope!!!) or Beauxbatons, where they speak French. Unless there was another school nearby that spoke English, I figured that it would be a very rough transition for Harry due to the probably language gap. This was because, despite Hogwarts being hostile from time to time, Harry does have a support network there, which I thought was very important, especially how guarded Harry is when it comes to trusting people. So that was my reasoning, but your idea is equally valid, and I do wonder what the story would have looked like had I gone down that road. I'm surprised I did not spend much time considering sending Harry to another school, but having grown up in a terrible school environment myself, I never did leave my own school either because of friends who supported me (however few there were).  I think I probably was just stuck in old habits and didn't really consider making up a new school for him to go to!

So, in conclusion, thanks a lot for the review. I am very glad you are enjoying the story, and feel the emotions are well captured. Also, NEVER feel guilty in "ranting" in a review of any of my stories! It is so refreshing to hear a well thought out argument like the one you presented. It gets me out of my head and makes me see things from another's perspective, which is often exactly what I need as a writer. I just hope you don't mind me writing such a long response, haha! Cheers, Whitetail.

Harry Potter is located in London in the dead of night. How exactly did he end up there, and what has he been doing? Well, any kid with half a brain knows not to talk to strangers.

I cannot give enough praise for this story. This is the story I have longed for when reading a harry-is-abused story. Every author, every damn one of them, skips over the most important part: building trust. Especially in the stories where Snape has also been an abuser. The miss the entire point of the relationship.

Trust is not instant or easy and abused kids just don't shake off the abuse, it's affects, the anger, rage and bitterness, the suspicion and wariness that abuse creates.

I love this story. It was so true to real life. Abused kids just think differently, they look at the world differently than kids that have been treated well. Their brains formed with this template and it won't ever change. It can be mitigated, managed and softened, but never eradicated.

I have not found an author that recognizes that and doesn't try to portray these attributes as "wrong" and needing to be "fixed". IRL, they won't change. Those stories have zero acceptance of Harry as he is, just expectations that he start to act "normal".

Again, this was the best abused!harry and Severitus story I have read. Bravo!!

You have completely captured the actions and thought processes of an abused kid. Lack of trust and suspicion and confusion are so eloquently captured. Very well done and i can't wait for more!

I'm not going to lie, I cried. Very well done.

Only small teensy question: wouldn't this be a good time for Harry to ask "why" snape wants harry to trust him? If i remember correctly, harry's convinced Snape is in league with DD, that people only want to use harry. Did he overcome that and I missed it? Or did Snape already answer that question?

    Anyhoo, can't wait for more!

    Author's Response:

Thanks for reviewing! Wow, you cried?

Your question is a valid one, and I probably should have done a better job portraying that in the story. Originally, Harry thought Snape was in league with Dumbledore, but he gradually became more and more confused as Snape's actions didn't fit his theory, so he slowly began to realize that Snape didn't have an agenda. The reason Harry was lashing out at Snape earlier was because he felt safe enough to do so. Of course, Harry wasn't fully aware of this shift in his view of Snape- it was mainly subconscious, but I did my best to portray it. If you look through later chapters, like 6 or 7 onward, you'll see how Harry's view of Snape gradually changes. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to explain that, in case anyone else was confused :)

somehow i don't think snape has actually tried to teach harry, nor will he in the future, no matter what promises he makes to DD. Snape can twist the truth around like no one can :-)

"Harry, it is of no need to know why you do or do not need them."

I think this is the stupidest, yet most common, attitude I've ever encountered in adults. Adults need to know "why" before they do something, why not teenagers? Especially if it's a teenager as important as Harry. Just so stupid *shakes head* Adults! What can you do?

And yeah, feeling more negative towards DD is totally normal after that 'conversation'.

The term continues on after Sirius' death, and Harry Potter is not okay. Wandering about aimlessly, Harry attempts to be who everyone wants him to be while slowly coming undone. Life has never been easy for The Boy Who Lived in the Cupboard Under the Stairs, but this is the straw that breaks the camel's back. Will anybody notice that Harry Potter is breaking? Is there hope? Perhaps it will soon ring true that "not all who wander are lost."

I can totally identify with the thought of "i give up" when trying to make myself eat when I'm depressed. It's just so much bother with no reward you know? And rewards are not what you want or desire anyway. You try and force yourself to maintain the last bit of mask for the benefit of others, to look normal and pass under the radar that expelling effort in any other direction (eating) is just not possible. It's all one can do to maintain the last shred of humanity for one's mask.

    Can't wait for more!

Author's Response: I definitely agree. There have been times this semester when I walk into the cafeteria and grab a tray, only to put it back and pick up an apple. Thanks for sharing and reading!
