    Why wouldn’t Severus leave himself a pensieve memory of his history with Lily and Harry? Or have Poppy or someone else he trusts explain this to him. This doesn’t make sense tome except to create more angst.

Harry spends the summer turning life in Diagonalley on its head, trying not to worry about the murderer Sirius Black, and attempting to avoid Severus Snape. In the midst of this he finds himself embroiled in an intense legal battle against Albus Dumbledore to decide his future. Severus is not happy to have his summer holidays interrupted to investigate Mrs. Figg's claims that all is not well at Privet Drive. He is even less happy at what he finds. Harry is sent to live with the Weasley family. Soon it turns out that raising a traumatized child is a challenge that might be too much for the Weasley parents, and Snape is very unhappy indeed to have his holidays interrupted once again.

    Interesting. I think your take on corporal punishment is a bit over the top. If everyone who was spanked went on to hurt their friends, that would be almost everyone in my generation. Certainly I’m not defending it especially with caning which is abuse. OTOH I like how Snape is making Harry think These things.

    Author's Response: Severus is talking about his own life here. And I do think his home life might have something to do with the fact he called Lily a racist name. Please do not take everything Severus says as my own opinion - characters I like tend to not say things I consider absolutely horrible in my stories, but their opinions can differ from mine quite a lot. (I don't consider Arthur Weasley a bad person for canonically physically punishing Fred and George after they tried to get Ron to make an unbreakable vow. It obviously didn't help, but I can forgive him for feeling that he needed to punish them severely and defaulting to the punishment he was used to.)
