Title: Chapter 7: Unforseen Obstacles

I... didn't even think about the clothes issue. I just assumed... with Dudley's sizing compared to Harry's... that it wouldn't be an issue. Oh, that could have been bad. Really bad. Because Harry hasn't been neglected and near-starved for the past few years, of course he'd be bigger than he would be at that time in canon. But, it's better that it happened now than, say, when he was 15. At least now that the whole clothing issue that was causing him pain is over with, I'm sure that the transformations from now on will be a lot smoother. And, until Harry gets his own room and things, it might be a good idea for it to be Erebus that sleeps at night... or, really, Erebus to be around unless Severus and Harry are only around those that are trusted in the know.
Author's Response: It would have been much worse had Dudley not been huge. But in my head a 5 year-old Dudley still has the potential to be smaller than a 9 year-old Harry. And you're right, Harry is not scrawny by any means. He's been well cared for over the last few years with good, nutritious food and plenty of toys and exercise. As for who gets to know...that's a big question isn't it. We'll touch on that in a chapter or two.

Mutual headbanging happening here. This is what happens with such a... lopsided 'education' that Harry had as Erebus. I suspect that his math skills are appropriate for his age, at least when it comes to fractions and measurements. Eventually Severus and Harry will figure out compromises when it comes to working on rounding out his education. I can see Snape even quietly working with Erebus on Harry's lessons while the rest of the students are in class as well. Not things that have to be interacted with, like writing, but leaving pages on his desk for Erebus to read. Y'know, some of my early memories of reading (this is like pre-school, kindergarten-ish) is working my way through the Little House series. They're novels, but the reading level is relatively low, even if the plotlines are not. I'd suggest getting Harry some classic novels like Black Beauty and Treasure Island to work on his reading comp. Bedtime stories and reading along are a great way to go. Severus is trying to blaze all these new trails interacting with Harry... I bet at least a few of their interactions could be smoothed over if he thinks about how Erebus reacted in similar situations. They may be two different species but, in their core, they're still the same person. I understand Harry's reluctance to change, seeing as he was in pain the previous time, but sometimes you just need to jump off that highboard into the water. Maybe Severus can talk about Erebus flying. I wouldn't be surprised if that was a treat to go outside and fly around after a day in the dungeons and indoors. I bet after a while Harry will start missing it.
Author's Response: Although I didn't really mention it, I did picture Snape offering young adult type novels (more along the lines of the early HP books than Pride and Prejudice or War and Peace). Still a bit difficult, though, for somebody whose written English is limited to words from potions class. The Little House series was some of my early reading as well. For some reason, when I add Snape & Little House the mental image makes me laugh.
Yes, his math skills are actually pretty good, since he had to do it all without aid of pen and paper.
Some but not all of the reactions could be smoothed over. Partially because Harry is in some ways more than what Erebus was, partially because the expectations are different. You don't expect a parrot to respond to logic or to sit still for an hour and engage in an activity just because you told it to. These are skills Harry is going to have to learn that Erebus was never expected to master. There are bound to be bumps.
As for being scared, it's only been a week...give him some time to muster up the courage and then we'll see.

I'm glad to see that Harry's out of his slump when it comes to Erebus. Now that he's changed to and fro, it should be easier for him to do on demand. Still, I have a headcanon that Harry didn't even know his name wasn't 'Freak Boy Potter' until he started first grade (Freaks don't get to go to Kindergarten). The dichotomy between Erebus and Harry... that's going to be fun to explore, now that he's going to be able to switch between the two more freely. And Harry's going to be able to get more comfortable in his human body, now that he has the ability to freely retreat into the body that he finds more comfortable when things get to be too much. Having that long jag in a human body after years as a parrot? A little too much to handle, but ultimately necessary to re-learn what being human is about. It's like going cold turkey for a bit, then working on weaning yourself off when it gets to be too much. I can imagine now, being able to take off and fly for a few hours being a reward for an assignment well done.
Author's Response: It's not an uncommon headcanon. Between Mrs. Fig and not completely hiding him away from everybody I'm going with the idea that he had to be introduced to other people from time to time. That way he heard his name enough to know it, but not enough for a parrot to pick it up. Of course parrots learn the words they want to learn and there's really no understanding which sounds they may choose to like.
I think everybody's pretty happy that Harry now has his safe retreat. I have a couple mental images of its use that may or may not make it into the story.

All I worry about, is Harry's punishment (from Dudley or Vernon) for 'stealing' candy after Severus leaves. Otherwise, the imagery of Snape in a candy store is hilarious. Almost as gold as him willingly in WWW, buying supplies off the twins.
Author's Response: Hm, you have given me food for thought. I could also imagine that Petunia would like to try to make them all forget the incident, since she doesn't want to be asked about knowing Snape. I wonder...Thank you! Well, now that would be hilarious to write or read! Makes me wonder if anyone has already written that story.
Snape had been kidnapped. When the Dark Lord apperares in the Great Hall with a tortured Snape, what will Harry do? And what will be the consequences of his actions?

I kept thinking that Harry's last line should have been 'I always thought it'd be Vernon, not Voldemort.' Well, at least he died knowing he mattered.
Author's Response: Well, that's a good idea :D actually, I'm thinking I might change it... he's not dead yet, I know it seems like he is, that was my intetnion, but I'll write a sequel in which you'll find out that he's very much alive! :D

The pain that those two have gone through. I'm just glad that they can actually get to know each other behind their respective public masks. Though, Draco may be a bit of a challenge to work around. He, after all, is used to being an only child and Harry, unfortunately, is the younger brother intruder in this situation. And younger siblings just almost always seem to need more attention than is 'acceptable', according to the older sibling(s).
Author's Response: Thank you so much for your detailed review, I greatly appreciate it!

Now, is this canon post-epilogue with a Death Eater twist (AKA did the Nagini 'death' scene happen), or is this something different. Welp, first things first, Harry needs to wake up, no matter what reactions are afterwards.
Author's Response: Hey there! Narcissa saved Severus after the Snake bite, but Harry really thought he was dead, that is why Draco is staying with Severus. Severus owes Narcissa a debt. Thanks for reading!
A spell Harry uses to ascertain Snape's loyalties goes horribly wrong. Will Snape use his newfound power over Harry to destroy him? Eventual Severitus. Absolutely no slash.

He didn't want to be alone, not that he wanted to leave. Incomplete sentences can be the worst.

They both know that it wasn't Petunia's generosity that yielded such gifts (Because that's what they are, for lack of their guarantee and commonality), but for piece of mind on both their parts, they're willing to pretend that it was.
After the third task of the Triwizard Tournament, life in Privet Drive is even more horrible for Harry. Nightmares, chores, punishments... But his life will change when he finds a black cat.

Oh, I can't wait for them to have their first 'human' conversation. There are a lot of things to clear up, apologies to be made, now that Severus has had his (metaphorical) blindfold ripped off. I don't expect smooth sailing, but I can see Severus' massive guilt complex becoming a large part in the differences in their relationship. I can see the stubbornness on Harry's part, believing that Snape would just go back to who he was before he was 'sick'. He's never had someone who's known about his abuse actually understand and sympathise with him before. Usually he gets those that are on the Dursley's side or just don't want to see.
