About me:

Hi!  My name is Kirinin, and I've been writing fanfiction for over ten years, now.  My initial fandom was Ranma 1/2.  After having a lot of fun with this fandom for around five years, I decided to branch out.

My first completed Harry fic is Secret of Slytherin, which was initially on fanfiction-dot-net.  I have to say that writing and posting this story has been one of the most fun and interesting literary experiences I've had.  For one thing, the tale started off as a bedtime story, meant to be shared with someone verbally, so it had to have a certain cadence.  Then, when I initially posted it, the feedback was thoughtful and thorough - to the point that people brought up and argued issues I'd never even thought of.  Some or the reviews themselves are works of art, and I've met a lot of great people through their analyses of the story.

It's wonderful to be able to share SoS with a new fanfiction community here, and give the story some more life.  :)

Secret of Slytherin now has a sequel called Geas of Gryffindor.  While Severus and Harry are very important characters in that tale, they are no longer its sole focus, which is why I have chosen not to post it here.  Please check it out on fanfiction.net, or on Archive of Our Own, where I am posting Secret of Slytherin and Geas of Gryffindor under the same penname.

I tend to like many if not all of the canon characters in the HP Universe, and really dislike it when an author is willing to demonize one set of characters to make the others look better.  My favorite characters to mess with are the Trio, Draco Malfoy, Severus Snape and Remus Lupin, but I'm willing to read anyone, so long as they're written thoughtfully.

As a final note, I tend to recommend stories I've enjoyed in my Author's Notes; I also have a C2 for Harry Potter fics on my fanfiction-dot-net account.  That is all.

I just tried to review three times in a row - the anonmyous reviews don't work - so eventually I got over my laziness and logged in, because I could not pass this lovely story without a lengthy review.

I adore Luna's involvement - the way she slips, surreptitious and yet immediately indispensible, into Harry's life. I know you said no comments on evil!Ginny, so I will refrain - but I do enjoy Luna's presence here, even if - or perhaps, especially if - romance does not become the central focus between them.

It is odd how little we've seen Ron and Hermione, as though the fact that they haven't had trauma in their lives excludes them from the club of Luna, Snape, and Harry, as though they could not possibly understand. I think this might be a mistake. I hope you don't demonize or marginalize either of Harry's two original best friends, who have been there for him since the beginning of the novels...

I truly feel for Harry, who seems to think he is unlovable, unacceptable... I do hope Snape and Luna help convince him otherwise. Your Snape is amazing, by the by - caring without lapsing into sappy, often quite honestly at a loss as to how to deal with Harry.

Thanks for this story - it is amazing so far, and I can't wait to see more!

Author's Response: I would have hoped that the quality of Harry's admittedly brief interactions with Ron and Hermione in the story so far would have kept you from worrying about any such thing, but no, I have no intention of demonizing them. Hermione, Ron, and Ginny are all very important to me, even if they don't play large roles in this story.

SEQUEL TO EQUILIBIRUM : A mentoring relationship is developing between young wizard Harry Potter and his dour Potions Professor, Severus Snape; but away from Hogwarts, Harry’s life is not all it seems. Summer before Year Two.

Very good! I like your version of Harry and Snape.

Many authors who write stories of this stripe choose to make Snape the only reasonable adult in a sea of stupidity or indifference. I'm glad you chose instead to make *all* of the teachers as concerned for Harry as Severus is. It seems much more probable your way, in that Dumbledore appears to be the odd man out.

I would, however, take it into consideration that what the Professors are doing is highly illegal. *All* of them could easily lose their jobs. While I understand that they might proceed anyway, this possibility should be taken into account, mentioned more than a vague 'we could get in trouble'. Severus is basically guilty of kidnapping. He could go to Azkaban. Where would Harry be then?

I think about this because I am in a similar situation with a student of mine right now. I imagine what would happen if I decided to spirit her away for four months and hope no-one noticed. I imagine it would not go well.

Of course, I don't have magic on my side, but still...

Lovedlovedloved. I especially like how you had this story end; while we don't see Snape getting ready to adopt Harry, it's clear that they're close and he's willing to lend his support and aid when necessary. Sweet without being cloying.

    Author's Response:

Oh, lord, sorry it took me so long to respond!  I read your review a while ago and meant to write you back but was in the midst of beta'ing a story.  What can I say--multitasking isn't my thing ;)  But I'm so glad you enjoyed the story!  I was a bit wary of how readers would respond to the ending, so knowing that you liked it is really relieving...and encouraging...and just makes me grin.  Thanks for sticking through this story 'til the end and another thanks for letting me know what you thought, Kirinin!

What happens when Harry Potter runs away from home, only to be followed by a certain greasy-haired potions master?

Wow. I mean, REALLY wow. You've got the 'voice' of a child just spot-on perfect; not just Harry's voice, but his perceptions of himself. The way he looks out for himself, yet has the sneaking suspicion that some of what Uncle Vernon says might be right - the way he hopes he becomes a 'model citizen' soon.

I also enjoy the subtle way you've included some things in the background that Harry isn't aware of, but the reader is: for instance, that Aunt Petunia worries about Harry (where Harry thinks that she just doesn't like to see Vernon mad.) I also liked the idea that the teacher keeps pressing Harry to tell her that something's wrong. A lot of people wonder about how no one ever figured out that the Dursleys were harming Harry; but if Harry refuses to say anything, how can anyone help him? Anyone who's ever dealt with abused children before knows how delicate a situation it really is: if you accuse the adult of abuse and it doesn't stick, the abuse often escalates. I do wonder if you'll continue to show the teacher making an effort, though; for instance, dropping by the Dursleys? It's hard to believe that Harry NEVER had a teacher, in at least six years of formal education, who cared enough to figure out what was going on.

Come to think of it, (forgive my rambling) but it's always struck me as strange that the Dursleys, who are terrified of anything out of the ordinary, would allow themselves to treat Harry so. Won't people notice? Won't they wonder what's WRONG with the Dursleys? When it comes to something so obvious as the fact that Harry was bitten by a dog, I think it's strange and amazing that Petunia wouldn't scoop him up and tend to it right away; because a suppurating wound isn't exactly something that the neighbors would ignore.

    Food for thought. ;)

Author's Response: Oh, wow, I dunno how I missed this one! Definitely, a feast for thought, really. ;)

Thirteen-year-old Harry is forced into the body of another Harry in a parallel world, where Snape adopted him years ago. And Snape is enraged to discover that his son has been replaced by a stranger. In our world, Snape discovers a new Harry--one who sees him as a father he never wanted to be. Each Harry must learn to survive in a strange new world, and search for a way home.

Well now, m'dear, where's the rest? You can send me the chapter and I'll beta again, if you like. :)

    -K

Author's Response: Aw, thanks for the offer.  Yes, I've been a naughty fanfic author.  I'm definitely getting coal in my stocking if I don't update soon.

I think I've finally (finally!) figured out what was bothering me about this next chapter.  I spent quite a bit of time staring at it in consternation.  Then I read a new writing book and had a light bulb moment.

I'm honestly not sure whether I should be with or without a beta at this point.  I think most betas would want to strangle me for my productivity issues.  What I really need is someone to chain me to the chair and then stand behind me with a whip.

Got any ideas on how to owl Argus Filch?

    Oh. Oh, WOW.

It's been a long while since I've picked up your fic - I think I was with you around when you released Chapter 5 - and I've just sped through, dazzled by its shinyness.

You've painted such an amazing Lily - she's warm, and funny, and I can't even find it in myself to pity her: she's healthy, happy, occupied with her job and her family. Her life is a lot brighter than many people's, regardless of her disability. I adore her humor: the bit about yellow raindrops having anger management issues because they were ignored middle children made me laugh aloud.

I nearly *cried* right along with Snape at the wedding, and Lily showing her support to *Severus* instead of the other way around was the perfect juxtaposition - the idea the Severus is the damaged one, that Lily has to take care of *him* brings a marvelous symmetry to their relationship.

I also am fond of Severus and Lily's Harry - he is very Slytherin in this chapter. Good on him for manipulating his way into Severus's life!

    Reading on,

    K

Wow. Uhm... guh. That just about destroyed me.

    Author's Response:

Chapter 17: #1 murderer of the readers.  ;)

I had technical difficulties (i.e., momentary stupidity) when responding to your last review on chapter 14, so I'll respond here:

So...haven't been around since chapter 5.  And where have you BEEN?  Hmm?  Oh, you have a life, you say?    Excuses, excuses.

    Shinyness!  Firefly fan, perhaps? :)

I'm so glad you like Lily!  She's a bit different from "fanon" Lily, but I see her true nature in that she's willing to dig in her heels and find happiness, despite circumstances.  And that her courage has matured into a quieter, firmer type than what she had as a child.

Thanks for noticing the raindrops--I enjoyed writing that.  Severus and Lily grew up together--they played together.  They would have a playful dynamic that they might not have with anyone else.

I wanted to add a few moments where Lily supported and took care of Severus, to show that each person has something to offer the other in the relationship.  It's not poor, self-sacrificing Severus taking care of poor, invalid Lily.  It's not a pity-party; they've made a life, a home with each other.

It's fun to imagine Harry as a Slytherin--as I'm sure you know.  ;)  Because Slytherins are manipulative and ambitious...but Harry has such a deep need to give and receive love that he would use his Slytherin talents to that purpose.  To Snape's benefit, as well.  :)

Thank you for the long, thoughtful review!  (Those are the yummiest!)

Title: Chapter 18: Chapter 18: Unannounced 18 May 2008

Oh, yay! Another chapter by Malora! I was waiting with bated breath, it did seem like this one took awhile. (Of course, that's because I looked at when you started posting and realized that you update *approximately* once a week, so...)

Mrs. Weasley was hilarious. I adored how the twins believe she will knit Severus a sweater; and I hope she does take the pair under her wing. Severus's empty fridge was hilarious (I *like* beans on toast, lol!)

The mental picture of the pair of them at the table, Severus in his half-destroyed duds, while the Weasleys tromped in - poor, but well-cared-for - was so embarrassing that I flushed on their behalf.

I am really anticipating the next one. After that breakdown in the flower patch, I have to imagine things'll be a little awkward between Harry and Snape as Harry realizes what a berk he's been... or does he still have doubts about Snape?

    Enjoying it as always,

    -K

    Author's Response:

Yes, I fondly remember the times when I was updating every few days.  Sigh.  Try to see the delay as a good sign.  Before, I was just checking over my rough draft for typos because the draft seemed "perfect" as is.  Now, my writing has improved enough that I can look at my original rough draft and see all kinds of problems that need fixing.  So...long delays between updates mean...my chapters will be even better!  Right?  (Work with me, here.)

Severus's fridge was in no way based on my own.  I have bread *and* ketchup, thank you very much!

Thank you for reviewing!  (And sorry I took so long replying to you on LJ…better late than never!)
