About me:

In short, I'm a girl gamer, professional student, chainmail artisan, copy editor, criminal justice buff, bibliophile, and an absolute pushover for big, sad puppy eyes (whether on dogs or no).

I've been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder but love public speaking; am a psychology major who much prefers the "hard" sciences; and three of my four best friends are named Jeff (and yes, it does make it confusing sometimes).

I enjoy cuddling and spirited discussions, but I absolutely adore doing both at the same time. I spend most nights puttering around the house but love road trips. I'm a born and bred Texan who desperately yearns for snow. And for all of my many shortcomings, I like who I am and can't wait to see who I'll be.

 Clarify things much?

I know i come to the story a bit late, but it has been well worth every moment I've spent at the computer, utterly enthralled.

I know you worry that perhaps you've strayed OOC with your characters, but I'd like to reassure you that, given even the small initial changes you made in canon to act as a base for the story, the characters' reactions are entirely appropriate and extraordinarily well thought out. The Harry you portray may not be the same Harry JKR wrote, but the two have different histories and in all honesty, I've often felt that her characters often lacked a certain realism that is far more evident in your development of them.

I'm particulary impressed with your portrayal of Severus. His is such a complex and difficult mind to understand, but I've been most pleased with his thought processes and reactions. Even in the books it's obvious he cares more than he lets show, whatever his reasons (and rationalizations) may be. His evolution throughout this story did not at any point give me pause or leave me momentarily shocked out of the flow of the story. I can easily see how the last chapter must have been extremely difficult to write as in no way did Rowling ever put him in such a situation as to reveal this side of his character, but I think that anyone with even a spark of decency would find himself utterly appalled to realize what a terrifically destructive effect they'd have on an already damaged child.

The whole plot is simply brilliant, the characters vivid, and (joy of all joys!) your spelling and grammar are beyond reproach! Should you ever have the time or inclination to continue with this story, I will no doubt be one of the many celebrating, but even as is, it is a marvelous piece of work that you should be incredibly proud of. Don't doubt yourself so...your instincts and insight are marvelous. Thank you for all of the effort and heart you have put into this...

    ~Monica

After Snape's visit to Surrey, Harry writes a thank-you letter that triggers an extended correspondence and a tentative friendship between the two of them.

A truly remarkable tale... Your insight has made for even more vivid and deep characters than Rowling could ever have envisioned. And oh! It's so incredibly lovely to read a story by someone who actually appreciates the finer nuances of proper punctuation and grammar!

I only regret not discovering your work earlier (and, simultaneously, that I hadn't come across it until after the conclusion as you most definitely have a talent for writing good cliffhangers!).

I believe you said you're working on an original work? I hope all is going smoothly. You have a real gift and this series has proven to be the absolutely perfect way to while away a rainy day (though I should note that technically, I didn't actually notice the weather until after I'd come to the end).

With much gratitude for your efforts and patience...

Before Harry arrives at Hogwarts, the faculty have a meeting and decide that Harry will need a mentor to help him adjust, keep him out of trouble, and make protecting him easier. They decide that this person should the Head of the House into which Harry is sorted, presumably Minerva McGonagall. But things, of course, don't turn out as planned, and Harry is harder to deal with than anyone expected. Nobody asked him if he wanted a mentor, after all...

NOTE: This story has a prologue. It is not necessary to the plot of the story, but if you wish to read it, it is called(predictably enough) 'Prologue to Life as Dictated by a Talking Hat'

One of the most brilliant and realistic character portrayals I've ever had the pleasure of reading. Even the majority of profesionally published authors I've read would have trouble coming up with such vivid characters. Well done indeed...

Author's Response: WOW thanks! That's a high compliment!
