Before Harry arrives at Hogwarts, the faculty have a meeting and decide that Harry will need a mentor to help him adjust, keep him out of trouble, and make protecting him easier. They decide that this person should the Head of the House into which Harry is sorted, presumably Minerva McGonagall. But things, of course, don't turn out as planned, and Harry is harder to deal with than anyone expected. Nobody asked him if he wanted a mentor, after all...

NOTE: This story has a prologue. It is not necessary to the plot of the story, but if you wish to read it, it is called(predictably enough) 'Prologue to Life as Dictated by a Talking Hat'

    One interesting point about your fic that was never touched on in canon; Harry doesn't trust grown-ups very much. He tends to deal with problems on his own, rather than asking a 'trusted teacher'. Harry had no one to trust before coming to Hogwarts, so he keeps that up.

    Your fic takes this point, and shows off what could have happened had Harry been forced to face this fact.

    I'm interested to see where you take this.

    I've been enjoying this fic and I'll be a bit sad to see it end. This was the kind of end I wanted for canon Harry and Severus but... ah, well. That's why I read fanfiction.

    Oh, vinettes from the future? How about when Harry decides to play with a huge snake? Or if Harry finds the diary after Ginny tosses it, will he show it to Snape?

    Or imagine Snape's reaction when Harry's name comes out of the Goblet.

    Yup, you got the perfect set up for Harry to say okay to the Sorting Hat suggesting Slytherin. Part of Harry's loyalty to Hagrid was that Hagrid rescued him from the Dursleys, and now Snape has taken that spot. Which makes me wonder how much would Harry adore and imitate Snape?

    Author's Response: *laughs* He didn't try to imitate Hagrid, now did he? He still is our lovely cheerful Harry here, too. Of course, you see the points I have to address looking at the challenge text, but the potions thing won't be pure adoration... Oh, wait till the next chapter. Thanks a lot for reviewing.
