    Wow...
(This has become one of my all-time favorite stories and I look forward to every update. You've left me speechless...)

    Author's Response:

ow, thank you very much *blushes*

I can't tell how grateful I am to Raewhit for translating this story, I love to be able to share with English readers!

A near tragedy and a shocking discovery lead two bitter enemies to much soul searching and eventual acceptance of each other. Much angst along the way though. Some Ginny and Harry.

I one of those people who rarely give any feedback -- and when I do it is only when I love the story and consider it an all-time, short-listed favorite. That said, I simply wanted to tell you that this is exactly the soppy event I wanted to see -- the time had come. You write well and your plot is well-developed. You've been pretty true to character throughout and have been gradually developing characterizations that demonstrate that people grow and change. Good job.

    Author's Response:

Thank you for finally taking the time out to let me know what you think. Lovely to hear from you and I am so glad that ASD is one of your favourites.

    Your compliments are much appreciated.

Oh geez -- I'm a little nervous now because I really do like this story (OOC and all) and eagerly await your updates ... please, please, please don't turn it into a Severus, Harry, Draco story. Its seems like 9 out of 10 Severus as Father/Guardian/Mentor stories add Draco into the mix. And then Harry and Draco go through a whole "I-hated-you-until-I-got-to-know-you-now-you're-like-my-brother" thing. There should be a warning label for that ... There are those of us who don't like Draco and want to see the #$%^ get what he deserves. I would like to see Severus press charges and Draco suffer the consequences of his actions. How about Ron and Neville and the other Gryffindor guys tormenting him to no end... He's not showing any remorse -- its all about him -- please let's see some comeuppance and not the happy family of three. (As you can see, I'm not real sympathetic toward him -- I'm not sympathetic toward him in the books either. And, I feel the need to beg like this because I'm really tired of those stories and I really want to keep reading this one.)

    Author's Response:

Thank you!  Sorry it took me a while to respond.  I just haven't had much computer time lately.  I'm sorry but Draco is going to have more of a role from here on.  Draco will not become Severus' son/Harry's brother, and he will never replace Ron and Hermione, and Harry's other close friends, which is something I see a lot of.  I don't think Harry would ever have any better friends than Ron and Hermione.  They are his true brother and sister, and nothing will change that.

People have a lot of different feelings towards Draco in SC, and I don't think that any one person is right or wrong.  Draco has done some terrible things, there's no denying that.  One thing that crosses my mind (and I'm not trying to sway anyone from his/her opinion, just remarking on it) is that most people here are big Snape fans, I would bet, and like that he was redeemed, became a better person, and has another chance at having a good life.  But there was a time when Severus was a true Death Eater and he did some terrible things in that time, too.  I would bet that he is at least partially responsible for innocent people suffering and dying, too.  Redemption is more meaningful if the character had truly fallen beforehand.

Yeah, one big...huge...difference is that Severus did come to feel remorse for his actions and he tried his best to atone, at the risk of his own life.  Draco has not reached that point, and has a long way to go before he does, if in fact he ever does get to that point.  But perhaps, just perhaps, Draco could learn to feel remorse and empathy, for Harry and others.

That doesn't mean that he won't be punished.  He definitely should be and he will be.  My hope is that people will continue reading to the end before judging Slave Child, but of course if someone has such strong feelings against Draco that they cannot enjoy the story anymore, then they have every right to stop reading.  I'm sorry for that, but I have had this story planned for a very long time.  Draco's fate was planned before I ever wrote the first sentence.  I believe it would ruin the story to make major changes at this point.

When Harry runs away from the Dursleys at the start of 3rd year, he is captured by Death Eaters and nearly killed, resulting in the loss of his magic. Only one man can help him now, Severus Snape, who has just discovered a shocking revelation . . . Harry is his son! Follow Harry and Severus as they attempt to build a relationship, resolve past conflicts, and heal Harry from the trauma he has endured.

Good story, well written. Your backstory was more plausible than many "yikes, Snape is Harry's biological father" stories. Yes, write a sequel...please.

Author's Response: Thanks, I tried very hard to make the Severus/Lily relationship a realistic one--I didn't want any one night stands or anything like that, and the way I wrote it seemed to make the msot sense to me.  And I shall be writing a sequel, since all of you really want me to! Thank you!

At the beginning of second year, Severus agrees to become Harry's guardian, little suspecting the far-reaching effects of this decision.

Coincidentally, I recently discovered these stories on fanfiction.net and am almost through them all. They are among the best I've read in the genre -- well-written; plausible dialogue; good, well-developed plot; enough canon characterization to remain within the HP realm without blatant, distracting OOC; an emotional appeal that makes you care what happens next: sweet, agonizing, heart-rendering, heart-warming. All-around good job.

Author's Response: Wow - thank you very much for such a flattering review. I am very glad you find the story so well done. I'm delighted to hear you felt the dialogue and characterizations were good - those are the things I always worry about most, since (as you point out) it's so easy to slip up! Thank you again!

When Harry and his new, pretty neighbor are rescued from Privet Drive on the eve of a Death Eater attack, Severus becomes Harry's reluctant guardian and healer in the weeks following. Old prejudices are challenged as Harry's new friend casts her own spell over Hogwarts' Potions Master.

My goodness woman, your fingers must be cramping over your keyboard you're giving so many lovely chapters at one time. I began this story a couple of weeks ago...only because you're the author and I love A Shocking Discovery so much. Both this and "Discovery" are among the best of the best father/guardian/mentor fics, and stand head and shoulders over many of what are generally considered the "best of the best." Thank you for such well-written, well-plotted stories and regular updates. And, thank you for the recent multiple chapters of this fic -- what a pleasant surprise, like Christmas come early. Nevertheless, you are a wicked woman for leaving us with this cliff hanger!

    Author's Response:

Thank you Coconut Rum for your very kind words. I am honoured that you rate me up ther with the best of the best. Very heartening words, I must say, because sometimes I really doubt my own ability, especially when there is not very much feedback.

I do have to tell you though, that as much as I wish I could write as quickly as you credit me with being able to do, I cannot! The story is written up to chapter 28, so, once I upload up to there, updates will be much slower.

Sorry for the cliffie, but you won't have a terribly long wait.

    Lesley

Before Harry arrives at Hogwarts, the faculty have a meeting and decide that Harry will need a mentor to help him adjust, keep him out of trouble, and make protecting him easier. They decide that this person should the Head of the House into which Harry is sorted, presumably Minerva McGonagall. But things, of course, don't turn out as planned, and Harry is harder to deal with than anyone expected. Nobody asked him if he wanted a mentor, after all...

NOTE: This story has a prologue. It is not necessary to the plot of the story, but if you wish to read it, it is called(predictably enough) 'Prologue to Life as Dictated by a Talking Hat'

I don't review often -- I tend to quietly read the stories I follow. But at some point during an exceptional story I have to speak up. This is a wonderfully original story and very well written, with well-developed characterizations. (And, you have selected one of the best story titles in fanfiction -- maybe the best.) Thank you for the good work and regular updates. Life as Dictated by a Talking Hat is a pleasure to read.

Author's Response: Wow, thanks!! And I'm glad you like my title - my sister thinks it's dumb. lol. :0)

Excellent! Just wanted to peek my head out of lurkdom long enough to say that. You have really built the characters and plot well, so that when Snape and Harry get to the point they arrive at in this chapter, the growth of their relationship is believable and their actions/reactions truly poignant. I also like your portrayal of the relationship between your Dumbledore and Snape. If Life as Dictated by a Talking Hat isn't the best of its genre, it certainly is way up there on the list. I always get a bit excited to see it on the Recent list.

Author's Response: Wow, I'm so glad you like it so much!! Thanks for coming (if only briefly) out of 'lurkdom'!

Desperate to escape his guilt and nightmares after the third task, Harry transforms into a hawk by accident and ends up breaking both wings and suffering partial memory loss. This is your best story yet...in my humble opinion.

Author's Response: Thank you very much! I'm starting to agree with you, though Angel and Prince Manor are up there too on my top 10.

Lurker here: Your writing style really sets the mood of the wizarding ER. The frantic pace is almost tangible. Nice job.

I love the healer's remark, "“Spell the po—Where, in Merlin’s name, did you hear that load of rubbish?! ..." Whenever I read about a healer or Madame Pompfrey spelling a potion into a patient's stomach, I wonder, What's up with that?

The Master Healer really does have an awful bedside manner. I have lots experience as a patient's loved one in the ER of my local hospital (during very serious medical emergencies). All the people who work there -- doctors, nurses, receptionists, lab techs, security guards, etc. -- are usually very sensitive to the family's emotional needs. However, once in a while you do meet one who is a bit rough around the edges. I've only meet one -- and that was the day my husband died of all days. When the shock of his death started to wear off weeks later, one of my first thoughts was, I can't believe that a-hole works in an ER.

    Excellent story.
