After a disastrous fifth-year Potions class with Potter, Severus discovers that Potter is being tortured by Umbridge. With Dumbledore evicted from Hogwarts, there’s little Severus can do to keep his oath to protect Potter. That is, until Severus is given the troubling news that Umbridge has given Potter another detention, thus compelling him to take Potter’s place.

Severus froze mid-footfall. He felt as though he’d had the wind knocked out of him.
"She's my mum." her chin lifted, her eyes clear. "She wrote me that letter to tell me about you. You're the only person she really mentioned, but I guess that makes sense, since you're my father. Who else was she supposed to talk about?"

Draco is always enthusiastic to spend the day with his uncle Sev, and he's extra excited when he gets to do so at Hogwarts this week. But only a few hours into the day and the headmaster visited the dungeons, bringing along an extra special "adventure" for the two. Harry Potter had runaway from his home at the Dursely's for the fifth time now, and Albus was starting to get flustered. None of the family service witches had seemed to do any help for little Harry, so Albus decided to send Severus this time. The only problem is that Harry's situation is much worse than Severus wanted to believe. What happens after Severus is witness to the boy's home life? They are winter, all darkness and bone-white skin, surviving on air that knives into them at each breath. Severus has always known this about himself, but it is devastating to see it in someone else, in the very child he has vowed to protect.

- i truly liked this series. It was very cute, both of them stumbling about with their relationship.
In the depths of the dungeons of Hogwarts, a school for witchcraft and wizardry, there was a dour man teaching his least favorite class of the day, fifth year potions. It was only his least favorite because of the amount of cauldron melting dunderheads in it. In particular, a defiant raven hair brat known as Potter.
However, on this day, the Potter brat held a mystery the potions master wanted to get to the bottom of. Earlier, when Potter had reached to grab potion supplies, his sleeve had slightly risen, revealing what Severus knew was a bruise. From the brief glance the Professor had gotten, it had looked like the injury wrapped around his wrist. The injury someone would receive if they were grabbed too hard by someone.
Unfortunately, as a Professor, Severus was required to ask questions if he had any inkling of anyone hurting a student. Severus braced himself and looked around his classroom to make sure no one had blown up yet. He sighed silently and banished both Longbottom's and Potter's potions. They looked like they were both at the brink of exploding into a sticky mess. Why couldn't he have one class without exploding cauldrons? Was it that hard to just follow directions?
